Try these guys for older style head units, that have all the modern gear in them...

chances r they're just telling u this cause they don't want to do it. i install my own stuff and there's really nothing to it. for wiring it up, all u need is a switched 12v, constant 12v(for memory), and ground. it's usually a good idea just to run new speaker wire. existing wire can be used provided it's still in good condition. installation of the newer radios require just a big rectangle hole. that's easily done by using the mounting piece that's included with the radio as a template. upgrading radios in these older cars is actually easier than in newer cars for the simple fact that it's just easier to take the dash apart.

its really simple. i dont know why they would say that. do they mean mount it? in a hidden place or something? because wiring is nothing. old or new its all the same. i want that old school look so id hide it in the glove-box or one of those that flips around. so you cant see the face. those retro ones are SWEET!!!

I rather get myself a real old radio (mounted in original spot) and a new alpine with IPOD connection. At least I know that it will sound clear

yeah i would too but like i said it already has an after market radio (dash is cut already) so no point in an old school radio i just want tunes and blue tooth and the such.

might aswell stick a new unit in get one thats a dvd player with a screen that comes out.. theres some fancey shit these days..:icon_tup:

heck i want to have a lcd screen instead of a cluster with a computer under my seat hooked to a haltech:lol:

kevk 10-16-10 05:10 AM

that would be nice but i dont have the room in the dash lol and i would love to see your set up as for me a lcd screen just wont work considering where the radio is but i need to find an install kit it seems that head units have gotten wider since th 70's and 80's

Have you got pics of your current head unit?

Even if it's old, I would of thought it would be the standard DIN size and easy enough to swap out for a new one?

As said, wiring up a new unit is a piece of piss. (power, earth, speakers)

Just put it under your seat if you want to keep original look. then just use the remote to change channels. That's how it is on friends 67 corvette.
Plus its better to just listen to your engine!! ;p

this would be ideal if i had the stock radio but like i said i have a pioner in it from 1982 its a tape deck not that i have tapes and iam not doing that shity tape connected to the cdplayer / mp3 player i hate those i also need to do some thing with the cb radio the only thing that works on that is the pa system i just want some thing i can use i thinking of finding on of those 1 dollor install places and just buy ing a head unit for around 150-200

yeah I have contacted these guys about a radio for my Rx-4 and they have alot of diffrent configurations, just email them with your dimentions and they will have something and they radios are arouind 200 bucks or so

Siraniko 10-21-10 04:41 PM

IMHO, it is ugly as hell and sound quality is questionable.

thats what iam worried about plus there is no point in it for on account that the dash has already been torn in to.

DiegoRx8 10-22-10 12:02 AM

contact hooks rotary, i think he has a rx3 radio. just buy that and do what i told you.

Siraniko 10-22-10 10:15 AM

it doesnt have to be from an old school RX. as long as it is the push-button AM FM or whatever and it looks old, grab it. Speaking of that, I will add it to my list in my monthly junkyard run.

john smack 10-22-10 10:32 AM

I have one from a Rx-4 if someone wants it.. not sure if it works as I never tried... cant see why it wouldnt everything else int he car worked except the widshield wipers

73rx313b 10-22-10 02:18 PM

kevk 10-23-10 02:15 AM
