My STILL NEW 1974 RX4 COUPE

Hello All,

I was directed here by some other forums/members. (clubrx in quebec).

Just want to introduce myslef, Max. I have searched for years for the perfect RX. Looking for either the an RX3 or RX4. I missed out on few for being too slow or fussy. Particularly a great silver RX3 a year and a half ago that was redone from A to Z by the owner who wanted $9500USD for it. It had not one mile on it yet since the ground up rebuild. The owner even offered to transport the car up to the boarder (40 mins from my home) for me at no charge on his next trip.

I refuesed to let that happen a second time. So on I searched.

Here is what i found this past summer. It might kill a few of you guys to know that it came from Ontairio:
-1974 RX4 2 Door Coupe
-Only 33000 original documentd babied miles
-Bought it from the original owner - in one of the pictures
-All Original Blue paint in perfect condition - never touched up anywhere with no rust, dings, scrathes or fading.
-All Original Chrome Trim in perfect condition
-All original interior in perfect conditon - no dash craks or anything missing.
-All original mechanics even the muffler
-Original jack still in its plastic
-Original tools still wrapped in its original red plastic pouch
-Original old school keys
-Original manuals, including the Mazda Shop Books and Parts Book
-Tires changed only once about five years ago due to age but new ones R still perfect
-Only the driver wipper was changed last summer (black) which is not original
-Well maintained and plated every year in Ontario having always passed inspection
-All body pnnel seems and underneath were always rust proofed including the wheels

The car runs great. So thats my current story.

I hope to see some of you at the Ottawa Rotary opening meet this summer.

Best regards

Max G.

That car is fantastic... I know Concours isn't big with rotary folks usually but you have a real potential contender there if you want to.

Thanks to All

Hello All,

Rather than cloud this thread with my individual thanks to each of you for the kind remarks please accept this post as a thank you to ALL of you that posted here.

Here are some answeres;

-I have no plans to modify the car as it too original to mess with.
-I plan on having it cleaned and detailed to a sunny sunday driver but show collectable.
-Yes it is an Automatic and Yes I do much prefer a Manual but when I when to my local Mazda dealer to try and order a new RX4 with my choice of color, options, and transmission they thought I was crazy thus I had to settle for what was out there.
-I do agree with "2wankel" in that it reminds me of a 70's style american muscle car yet its a Japanese model and technology (best of all a Rotary)
-They only made this body style for 1973 and 1974. 1974 was the first year of the Rotary 13B on any Mazda. The 73 RX4 had the 12A. The 75 had the nose flattened and the 13B Rotary became restricted some-what due to the climbing of oil prices of the mid 70's. So they only made thie body style and 13B Rotary combination for one year. This makes it even more rare than I thought. I found this out after I bought the car. I wonder how many were produced and how many still exist today in its original form.

Some Questions;

I wonder why it is that non modified RX's or Rotary's are not appreciated like other collectable's as "flufysheep" remarked. It seems to be the general feeiling I get from Mazda lovers alike. Maybe its due to that fact that only recently has Mazda hit 30+ years in North America and are thus only now being looked at as collectable vintage auto's by car lovers. I would assume also that since we are all Rotary Gear Heads and love our cars so much we seem to keep them new through mods leaving no collectable for any one else. Whats you take on this one.

Best regards

Max G.

I keep drooling over the rx4 for sale down in corpus cristi tx thats on the forums here... but your car is completely amazing! So what did you do to sweet talk that little old lady out of her car?
You: " Well its got one of those unreliable Ro-Tar-ey engines...."

RotorRican 02-12-07 08:18 PM

As you well know, that is one SWEET! -4, am glad is on good hands and not someone like me. I will be modifying the crapola of it! and of course messing it up.
Keep it original and enjoy it.

Hello Arnel,

Wow, is evryone on this forum? How is your new baby coming along? I assume you have teken delivery of it by now.

The little bird was partially correct. All my cars would have been for sale if I were able to hook up with the guy for the 69 Cosmo but unfortunaltly that did not happen-as of yet. He posted one for sale in Brazil and either some one got to it before me or he jsold it locally. Either way a reply would have been nice, or a new post stating the car is no longer available. I have aquired another since, all original almost as good as my RX4 in condition, a 1972 Triumph STAG.

Should I come accross a 67-69 Cosmo 110, depending on its cost to me I will have to sell off my collection. The RX4 would obviously be the last to go as I would try to avoid selling her.

Hope all is well with you,

Regards

I don't think it's just rotaries or Mazdas, but Japanese cars in general have not been considered collectable. Too cheap and, until the late 70s at least, not very desirable to the average guy even when they were new. It's changing and eventually maybe mint condition old-school Japanese cars will be worth having.

In 2020 I think some of the then 30 year old NSXs might be worth something... just as an example.

Hello,

I must say that anyone with the name sexycheerleader can post on my threads anytime. Those photos are before I cleaned the car and were taken at point of purchase. It had not been washed yet inside or out. I still haven't done so yet as it's in storage now. As soon as the weather here in frozen Montreal gets better I'll start the detailing etc...

Thanks for your reply.

regards

Max
