Working on the trans adapter along with the combo Subaru/Mazda clutch and then the starter install.
In the process of confirming the correct thickness for the adapter plate which is probably going to be 1" or more. Not real interested in purchasing a 15" x 15" plate of Al x 1 inch thick, for mega bucks and then throwing away the 12" x 12" center that needs to be cut out. Just doesn't make sense to do that. So progress is happening and I'm dealing with one problem at a time. :) |

Yes please post pictures and if you wanted to sell it I'd be interested. What year subie trans was it made for? I have not seen such a thing on Kennedy's website
AFAIK they don't make it anymore. The starter is from an auto subaru, flywheel is kennedy but looks suspiciously like the subaru piece. The clutch and PP are subaru units. The pilot bushing is one piece of brass. I have plans to use it, so selling is out of the question, but a barrage of pics are incoming. PP, flywheel, clutch, and starter. Oh my...
You have been busy. I've always wondered how well a rotary would do with AWD in a rally environment. Too bad Mazda is too busy to bother with making an AWD RX-8...
Sooo subscribing to this! |
any updates to this? this is literally combining my 2 favorite car companies.
|
I'm swapping out the auto trans for the 5 speed now. This needs to be completed before finishing the adapter, then I can confirm the clutch and starter operation.
Unfortunately probably going to have to put the Subaru engine back in around September so I can drive it through the winter. Then finish the engine conversion next spring. I don't want to drive my Rx-7 through the winter |
Helloooo mazda an awd drive rotary.....would be awesome...a twin turbo or 20b rx8 would be great....good luck with build
|
This is quite the science project, right on for taking this on!
|
AWESOME!!!! i love it

mr isaac your still around u live in the nw still?

Awesome project, dude!
I remember ice racing in Cache Creek, BC. There was a guy with an old Sube wagon with a NA 13B mated to the stock Sube 5speed. It was the fastest car there and you couldn't hear any other cars on the track... just him. You always knew when he was at the end of the long straight by the big backfire that would echo through the valley. Good luck! |
what kind of power can the impreza drive train take?
|
Awesome, Bruce.

I like where your taking this very interesting project, if I may make a few suggestions, for radiator clearance issues have you considered mounting it in the rear and venting the trunk or placing it where the a/c condenser is, from what I gather this will be a race car and not a street queen. From what I remember the subie drive train can handle quite a bit of power and if there is any doubt grab one from a junked WRX or STI.

This is sick. I allways wish I could do this to my rx7 never could figure out how to do it. . Wish it could be easy like get a subie sub frame and front suspension on a rx7 . But from what I've been able to tell not all suspensionmount to the sub frame cross member.
It would be awesome if u could bolt it on like the fc sub fram swap in to a first gen and just need to drill one hole for each side plus holes for the sway bar mounts. I also do rally cross in my rx7 Few question do the front Axels from the wad come put at 90 deg to the trans or are the Angeles forwards. And way u could get pics of the Axels and sub fron suspension? Could allways go tube front end lol. |

Time for an update

No rotor power under the hood yet. Decided I needed to drive this car through the winter instead of subjecting the FC to the salty roads. Therefore before winter arrived I switched my focus from engine swap to transmission swap (was automatic). I was able to get an '02 Forester 5 speed off Craigslist for real cheap that had a noise in it. Upon disassembly found the circlip had come off the center viscous differential and got crunched by the transfer gears. Ended up replacing some very worn bearings, cleaning out some metal debris inside the case, and calling it good. Couple of teeth in the transfer gears had a chip from eating the circlip which I hear clicking every time I decellerate now. So I've got most of the trans swap issues sorted out and have been doing rallycross since December. Man AWD is so fantastic I wonder why I tried rallycross with RWD. The acceleration off the line is just amazing, throwng the car sideways in the snow and being able to control it is a blast.
I was really afraid I would grow to like the Subie engine and therefore the desire to install the rotary would diminish. Fortunately this is not the case. Having daily driven a rotary for almost 10 years I really notice the terrible noises these piston engines make. All the bearing knock and piston slap when these things are cold is terrible and frightening. Power is really great down low but by 5k rpm the engine is thrashing itself into oblivion. So needless to say I'm still very entusiastic about this project and hope to have the trans adapter plate done before spring arrives :) |

in case it helps you can use an fd pump on a 13b s5 housing. the pump rotates in reverse but to correct that you can get the gilmer drive pulleys from atkins rotary and the backside of the belt will run the waterpump.
|
sorry not atkins. someone else does the gilmers for fd's check out the fd section for info. I know ive seen em
|
Subscribed. I want to bolt on a 13B to the WRX STi 6 speed. Will this be all I need? Anybody know how this swap went?
|
Did the AWD 12A come to life?
