My 13b bridgeport starlet race car

Gday! I'm Willie from New Zealand and here is my little KP60 race car that i'm building up. I used to race it with a toyota 4age 1600 20 valve engine and t50 gearbox combo, was fun but wanted to learn something new and go a bit faster!

This is the car as I used to race it!

Well its sitting in there, have a s1 bellhousing and mx5 box to go behind it. Have a bit of chopping to do now, need to raise the tunnel a bit and then some mounts to make. Will have to decide on a few more things, would quite like to do a proper four link in the back with a panhard rod and paint the inside. Might make the move to 15s so can get a decent sized rotor on the the front and get it to stop as at the last clubday it was starting to not stop as well as i'd like it to.

Cut a bit of a hole in the car on Saturday

Had to cut a little bit more out to clear the starter motor as well but should be enough now, Will take her into work next weekend and make the engine mounts and gearbox mounts then can start on the tunnel.

So yeah that's how it will sit. Its slightly to the passenger side to clear the steering rack which will be a good thing for weight anyhow. Lots to do!

Engine and box are mounted, Doesn't really show how far back and low we got it unfortunately but it is low and far back! Scored a moroso alloy oil pan yesterday which i'm stoked about as it fits and is really nice with internal gates and allows the engine to sit super low.

Next onto the tunnel, will make it a fair bit bigger so that when I get sick of getting passed again on the straights in I can fit a turbo box in haha.

Bit more progress
Gearbox is all together with the mx5 gearset, Bought a clutch and sorted out the radiator and oil cooler and what not.
The biggest thing that I have achieved and has been bothering me for a while is the gearbox tunnel is completed now, Was my first go at doing one and I made it a fair bit bigger so that I can run a turbo box or if I ever want to run a different engine setup it shouldn't be to much of a hassle. Will get onto painting the inside tomorrow if its a good day. Looking forward to getting it running and going racing again!!!

Here's a couple of pics of the finished tunnel

The wee starlet is getting closer to going again, engine is almost done, should be able to put it together shortly, exciting times.
Made the change to 15 inch rims and Kumho S700 slicks, so I could get some bigger brakes under there, I thought about it for a fit and went for a few rides in a couple of mates race cars and then had a look at what I had lying around. Turns out Nissan R31 turbo hubs are the same spindle size as cressida so with that and a bit of modifying to get a wheel bearing seal to fit they went on with new wheel bearings of course.
The good thing about that is that now I could re drill a 280 x 30mm skyline m spec disc to 4x114.3 and that part was done, the best part about that is there common and got a brand new set of a mate who had just gone bigger on his silvia for some beer
Scored some skyline r32 gtst four pots for next to nothing of a friend and with a 2.5mm spacer washer between the caliper and cressida strut brake mounts everything lines up perfectly. Pretty happy and the whole setup owes me less than $300 bucks. So had the calipers rebuilt and now just have to buy some front pads. Think i'm going to run with Endless N35s endurance pads.
Also made new brake and clutch and fuel lines and painted the engine bay, pulled the diff apart and had it straightened so no more 6 mm toe out in the rear which hopefully is a good thing, if nothing else it won't be so hard on wheel bearings! Made some rose jointed rear arms last week as well, used 5/8 Teflon lined chrome molly rose joints that were quite spendy so hopefully there good.
Have changed a few things ecu wise as well, It now has a Link G4 extreme, I was going to run my old G4 storm but ran out of inputs. It now also has oil pressure, oil temp, fuel pressure, EGT's in each rotor and a wide band into the ecu so I can log everything and a shiny link display dash to see it all on.

Anywho here is some pics of progress.

So yeah pretty busy but still a fair bit more to do!

Exciting times! Jason my friendly rotor head/engine builder finished the short block last weekend so picked it up Monday night. So during my spare time after work during the week put the manifold and throttle body on, clutch and flywheel, moroso sump and baffle plate and gearbox, painted a few things and then into the engine bay yesterday, bit of pluming to do with the fuel lines and radiator lines and then another part done, Getting closer to making some noise!

Nice mate. Have a friend who raced the same model Starlet many years ago in OSCAR class with a 12a PP, went extremely well. Looks like you are doing a good job.
Good luck.

kiwipwr 05-09-13 04:30 AM

Cheers mate! Was talking to a friend the other day that runs a rotary viva in OSCA actually! I'm pretty keen to go racing in that class as well!

DriveFast7 05-15-13 01:48 PM

Bad Ass.

ultimatejay 05-15-13 09:18 PM

Looks nice. Why did you cut the firewall out when it looks like you have more than enough room?

mattallac 05-15-13 10:48 PM

I would think the fire wall is set back so he can A - set the motor back more if he wanted or B- makes it east to remove the motor and trans because its a race car . I think it looks great and its a clean job . good work

kiwipwr 05-16-13 05:09 AM

Yeah that's pretty much it. I had to pull the box out the other day to modify something, it took 15 minutes. With the old engine I couldn't get the box out with out taking the motor out! I made it big so that its easy to work on and I can fit a bigger box in if I ever decide to build a turbo motor up for the wee car as well! The small M series box doesn't really fit in the standard tunnel that well either, it can be done but the engine would be on a big slant and you couldn't mount it as far back.

Quick update, started for the first time this arvo. To say I'm stoked would be an understatement!!!
Here's a quick vid!

Will be on the dyno for a tune in the next couple of weeks.

CamanoRx2 07-09-13 10:10 AM

Nice! A buddy of mine JUST picked up one for a daily, and has already brought up dropping an S4/5 into it....

Darryl C. ?!!!!! Thats me!(but not, really. That is my name, though. Even spelled if correctly!)

rotorican85 07-09-13 11:16 AM

wow that sounds good!!!

kiwipwr 07-09-13 12:15 PM

Cheers! It actually has another muffler jammed on to the back of it there while it was idling in the garage so sounds a whole lot crisper without it but just to rowdy with all the neighbors home haha

kiwipwr 01-02-14 06:52 PM

Bit of an update on the starship. Did the Clubday at ruapuna a few weekends ago. Looks like we have finally sorted the cooling issues completely which was a big load of my mind and am super stoked about as have been chasing it for a while and felt like we were going round in circles.
Went 1:37:205 in qualy which is within a tenth of a PB on what every body was saying felt like a slippery track, there was a drift event the day before so a fair bit of crap on the track but I didn't actually think it was to bad.
So going into race one 8th on the grid in club saloons I was super excited.... only to break and axle when the lights went out:( so that was my day done. Destroyed the carrier in the diff head as well. Nah well that's racing and to be fair have done quite a few seasons with a locked diff and those axles.

All fixed now and ready to go again!
Anywho hears a vid from qualy, watch in HD and you will see the 27mm spanner floating around haha! My bad!!!

sodrifter 01-02-14 06:56 PM

very nice! way to show that r32 whos boss.

sleeper7 01-02-14 07:04 PM

Nice work! :icon_tup:

kiwipwr 01-02-14 10:42 PM

Cheers, that GTR wound up makes 480hp atws on the same dyno that my car was tuned on, mine makes 205hp haha, it ain't all about grunt! To be fair the chap in the gtr was pretty green and i'm sure when he has a bit more time in the seat he will be fast!

Interesting that I had no end of overheating problems in my car, Tried different radiators, tried ducting, tried moving the oil cooler around a bit. In the end I went to twin oil coolers a little bigger than FD ones. Everything is perfect now, ECT sits on 87 deg c and Oil temp 90 deg c after the coolers and it has even sorted out the higher egts on the rear rotor that I had before, now at most there is a 30 deg c split. Stoked!!!

blwfly 01-04-14 01:41 PM

wow that's a choice setup there.add a turbo and no one will catch you.

junito1 01-04-14 03:18 PM

Nice driving! Looks like a nice simple setup that is a ton of fun. HAs that miata transmission had any work done?

kiwipwr 01-04-14 11:59 PM

Its the second miata gearset in the car actually, I stripped the drive to the lay shaft in the last one doing some testing but was a bit hard on it to be fair. I have a complete rebuild kit for this one and in the winter I will tear it down and give it a birthday. Great little box and pretty close in ratios for a factory gearset really! Really nice shift action to.

raffer 01-05-14 12:13 AM

LOVED the video !

What final gear on the differential, and what rpms are you shifting at?

kiwipwr 01-06-14 03:48 AM

4.77 ratio, shift at 8500, 580mm tall tire.
Cheers!
