looking at GLC

near my friend's house, there's an old GLC with a straight body. not sure if it runs or not.

i was thinking of offering a couple hundred for it and putting a 12a or 13b in it.

does anyone know where i can find info on this car? how involved is the swap? will the bellhousing match up, or will i have to use an rx7 tranny? how heavy is the GLC (IIRC this one is a wagon)? they're all more than 25 years old, right?

Get it! You'll need an RX-7 tranny and maybe an RX-3 front subframe if your front cover uses one of those front mounts. Otherwise, the stock boinger mounts can be modified to work with FC side motor mounts (but the pan mounted one might need to be modified).

I'm not sure of anywhere to find info on the car. I have one and only know what I know from working on it (has a 13B in it).

Hey, I have some more great info I could type here if you're actually going to get it.

i'm hoping to track the owner down this weekend. it sits in the same spot every tiem i drive by, so i'm not sure it runs, so that may be a pretty good bargaining chip. if i could pick it up for a couple hundred i could sell my SE and have about 1500 to throw at a conversion project.

That would be extremely cool! Well, only if you really want to sell the SE of course.

I wish mine would have been stock when I got it. As it sat, it already had most of a 13B conversion completed. all it needed was a fuel cell to be mounted (not really necessary, but the rear deck was already modified), fuel pump, and a cooling system.

The PO kept the 13B so I started test fitting a couple engines I had. It currently has an old style four port 13B in it with a '79-'82 short style 3 row core radiator mounted up where the AC condensor would normally go (stock GLC rad is narrower and too close to the rotary waterpump pulley). I got it running a while ago but it needs to broken in fully before I'll know how powerful it'll be. It also overheats the oil because I'm using one of those oil to water coolers from an '83-'85 12A that;s been stretched to fit a 13B. The engine's water tube is th escrew-in style that is too small (inner diameter) to flow enough. It'd probably work better if it had a later pressed-in fitting on the rear plate. I'll just have to go with an air oil cooler and mount it IN FRONT of the radiator due to a general lack of space.

what kind of 13b do you have in yours? if i get it, my plan of action would be to use a S4 motor and a simple carb setup with a custom exhaust system most likely involving an RB header and a muffler or two.

Jeff20B 05-21-04 07:17 PM

R5 13B. The S4 engine will be a lot lighter. You'll need to do yourself a favor and either keep the stock exhaust manifold or build a custom header that will clear the idler arm. A standard (1st gen) RB header won't fit (mine came with one that had been hammered and dented in).

Yes, do a carb. No point spending thousands on an FI system in something this old unless you were looking for top performance and had money to burn. I'm going with a carb.

Hey nice to know some one else has an GLC proyect going. I had my 78 GLC for a while now. I had in it a 13B motor but since I had to move to an apartment I sold the engine and put the car on a storage parking . It has been siting there for about a year. Next week I move to a house and I will be ready to start the proyect. This time Iam going with 13BT from japan.

Cool! I'm going to start pulling my R5 13B tonight to install my JDM engine as soon as I can.

Gotta go drain the coolant...

Nice:) let me know how it comes out. Also try on taking pictures. What year is your GLC?

Jeff20B 05-23-04 02:15 AM

78. I'll PM you with the rest so as not to clutter up this thread.

Jeff20B 05-28-04 02:56 AM

cpt_gloval, keep us posted on your progress of getting the car.

Jeff20B 05-28-04 12:02 PM

cpt_gloval, do you know anything about steve84gs' GLC?
