Importing
 

I know how difficult it is to import new cars into the U.S. these days, but how hard is it to import a car like the RX-2/3/4 or other cars here since they are 25 years old or older?

It used to be that after 25 years the car was considered a classic, and there was no real restrictions on bringing them in. I am pretty sure this is still the case where you are. Things are a little different now in California, as the rolling exemption has been taken away. I would say anything before 75 can be brought in without any type of crash test, or emissions hassles.

Thanks for the info. So when I go to import one, can I just basically walk into the DMV and have it titled and registered without problems? Do I need a Registered Importer?

I don't know about importing into the u.s. but in the past year i have imported a repu and an rx3 from the u.s. to canada and it was no problem at all, all i needed to do was get a fedral inspection which just makes sure the car is what you say it is, and then i have to bet a mechanical inspection which is provincially. But that really has nothing to do with the importing itself.

where are you importing a car from this info might help.

Probably Japan. I'm not only interested in an RX, but maybe other vintage imports.

i wouldnt assume that finding a vintage rotary in japan would be cheap/easy. I've heard that even FB's are damn near impossible to find over there.

Canada and U.S. have some sweet agreement that (to my understanding) any vehicle legal in the other country is legal to be legal in the other, but just after inspections, but to my knowldege importing from Japan or "Over Seas" requires alot more hoops to jump through, although i'm not 100% sure on this.

Not all cars that are legal for importing into the states are legal to import into canada, and vise versa, i have heard that it is illegal to have rhd cars in the U.S. is this true? Because it is allowed up here.
