Help! 1200/R-100 clutch slave cylinder

Hi guys, I need some assistance from the old school Mazda guys. The clutch slave cylinder on my Mazda 1200 decided to go out last night while driving home and I'm having a real hard time even finding a kit for it.

I tried NAPA and they have nothing at all in print for a 1200, figured if Napa doesn't have it then no other regular auto parts chain will have it. I suppose I'll try a few other places for kicks, but most usually tell me there is no listing at all for a '71 1200.

Are 1200 / R-100 clutch slaves the same? I'm guessing probably not but can't be 100% sure as I've never seen a stock R-100 tranny.

Any advice? I'm thinking perhaps trying to find a place that specialized in rebuilding clutch master/slave cylinders but where to begin in that search I really have no idea.

Thanks,
Mike

Here's what I'd do. I've got an RX-2. Almost the same car. I converted from an automatic tranny to an 84 5 spd. For simplicities sake I wanted all the clutch stuff to be the same vintage, so I bought an 84 Clutch Master, Clutch Slave, clutch hose to go with the trans. In order for it to bolt up to the RX-2 all I had to do was remove one of the studs from the pedal assembly (it pokes through the firewall) and drill out the threads that were in the 84 MC. I then used two long bolts with locknuts and washers and bolted the unit in place.

Essentially, I used an 84 MC on a 73 RX-2 and all I did was remove one stud and the threads from the MC itself. Works like a charm and is easily rebuildable.

the auto car has the room for a bottom starter so going
to a rx7 trani isn't a problem, there is not enough room
on the bottom for a starter on the manual cars until you
are into the rx3.
all i can suggest is keep an eye on ebay that is where
i found a spare slave for my rx2.

I wasn't suggesting he change trannys, just use the MC from a later car and adapt it to fit the R100 by adding/removing studs, drilling out threads if necessary - whatever it takes to bolt it to the firewall. From there, as long as the hose screws into it, it should work - they are very simple things as you know.

he is looking for the slave i think.
but yes the master could be made to work.

ah you are right. I read it wrong . . .

Stick it in a box, ship it to White Post Resorations in VA.

They will re-sleeve the cylinder bore with either stainless steel or nickel & install new neoprene seals. Heck, if the piston is shot, they's make a new one for you on the lathe.

All of this of course is NOT cheap. I paid somewhere around $200 a piece for 4 wheel cylinders on '54 Porsche 356 3 years ago. Permanent solution though...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Yes, it's the slave that needs attention. I've glanced at it and it looks a little weird, but I may be able to get a stock RX-7 slave to fit somehow. My main worry is if the threads for the line are the same on both but I'll know more once I remove the 1200 one.

Thanks,
Mike

Use a 79-80 OR SA clutch slave. beginning 81, the thread pitch changed.

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Your car more closely resembles a 808/Mizer with a 1300cc engine or GLC 77-78 with a 1300cc engine mechanically. Try to find one of these at PnP to see if this might work. Mazda did sell your car with the same 1300cc engine in the later years (75-76) with your body style. I think this may work better than the rotary suggestions.

Smeagol...how are you? Sorry to hear about the troubles with ya Slave cylinder..
Mr. John McBeth is right in saying that you should find a Mizer or a RWD GLC. I went the opposite way with my 1200 coupe and replaced the 1200 motor with a 1400 motor from a GLC...used the 1200 Clutch master and SLAVE CYLINDER on the GLC gearbox and everything was fine! So you shouldnt have a problem going the other way about it....know what i mean? Hope ya troubles are over!

Doing good, how's things with you? Well I've pretty much exhausted all resources on the whole 1200 slave cylinder mission. I called pretty much every auto parts place and even tried several clutch places. None offer parts or can get parts or even did rebuilds on slave cylinders. Also tried to cross reference 808/GLC from all years but that got me nowhere quick.

What I'm gonna end up doing is having my dad machine out the 1200 slave cylinder housing to accomodate the 79-85 RX-7 (and many others) sized internals, then it will be no problem finding rebuild kits easily. Probably should have just done that from the start and saved an entire week of part hunting, but hey it was fun.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, and I'll let ya know how it turns out.

savannaGT: yeah this whole situation has tempted me to drop a 12A and 5 spd. tranny into the car, but that's a really big project to get into over a tiny slave cylinder.

Mike
