e shaft

i am thinking about making my own rotarie engine from cnc and i was just wondering what type of metal did mazda use on the e shaft because all i know is when i picked up myne out of my 12a good hell it is alot oheaver than it looks lol, also would it be possible for me to make the intire engine out of aluminum?

I have always wondered why the plates weren't made of aluminum. Any one know the answer?

The reason that the plates aren't aluminum is because of the oil control rings. Wear of the apex seals is spread all around the housing, so that there really isn't much persistent contact. The oil control rings are in constant contact and constantly abrading the surface. This has to be the case because they're also a significant heat sink to cool the rotors (so the spring loads will always be pretty heavy). Aluminum can't be surface hardened before coating the way that the iron can.

If you want to drop some blanchard-ground aluminum plate into a CNC mill and just make a new one every several thousand miles, you can definitely do that. If you quickly CNC machined an engine block from aluminum, it probably would hold up for a while, but wouldn't be viable for a production engine.

On a side note, I would definitely like to check out your solid models once you've got it all made up.

i wasnt really planning on doing the whole thing and expessially not the shaft out of alluminum i was sorda looking into buying some blown 12a's and using some of the rotors out of them and so with the housings iron it will be!!! but i am still confused what is the e shaft made out of?
