E-brake cable for rear disc brake conversion
 

For those who have done a rear disc brake conversion on RX-2 or RX-3 using the 1st gen GSL cables (2 sections: from e-brake then it clips to the rear section). I need to shorten the mid-section but I dont want to use the "Home Depot" special. Im referring to those cable clips (used mainly for hanging a/c units or heavy stuff) that needs to be crimped. Anyone knows where I can get a custom cable?

Hmm, so the GSL cables aren't right eh? I'm about to do this myself, but still haven't started on it. My pal gave me a set of GSL cables to try but apparently they're not right.

Take your cable to a bicycle shop and see if they have any connectors that you might be able to adapt. If not, you may be looking at at casting lead ends on the shortened cable. Not sure if the lead will hold up as well as the steel ones though. The lead may prematurely wear due to abrasion.

I completed the conversion using the original RX3 cables. They are longer than the RX7 cables and can be readily addapted.

You need approx 4 inches of tube with the same inside diameter as the tube that recieves the RX3 cable on the drum brakes.

The end on the RX3 cable is smaller than that on the RX7 cable. Using a block of mild steel I manufactured an adapter with the same profile as the RX7 cable end with more depth to recieve the RX3 cable end. The block is center drilled through, the size of the cable and then partially drilled the size of the RX3 cable end. Then a saw kerf is made from the side the of the block the size of the RX3 cable diameter.

The RX3 cable fits into the block now emulating the RX7 cable end and should fit into the E-brake cable fork on the disk brakes. The tube is cut to length to make up the difference in the cable lenght and is tack welded to the original RX7 "L" bracket for the cable and a small saw kerf on the side of the tube is made in the same possition as the clip that held the original RX3 cable in place. The tube holds the RX3 cable in position and the block of steel anchors the cable end on the e-brake forks. No micky mouse, a little more weight for the block and tube.

It can all be built using simple saw sand files or a grinder for more speed.

The FB's (GSL/SE or not) came with 2 unequal length e-brake cables which consist of a wye (handbrake), mid-section and rear.

If you use 2 short mid-section, there is no need to use any “home depot special devices” to complete the task. I upgraded both of my 73 and 75 RX-3's to rear disc brake. I used:
1. two sets of GSL/SE e-brake cables (complete)
2. two short mid-sections from a GS models.
3. Rotary Power and RESpeed brackets. Except with the RESpeed, I mounted the brake caliper in the rear (instead of front) to make a simple installation of e-brake cable.

Wacky do you have the wiring diagram for a 75 808?
I need to connect my new guages and I want to remove any extra wires from under the dash and engine compartment.

I have an extra set with long rear sections but I need to get another short mid-section. I forget to mention that the FB mid-section needs a little grinding to fit the stock RX-3's wye. The FB's wye cable (handbrake side) is appx 1" longer than a RX-3. I used the FB in the 75 RX-3 as the original handbrake side cable broke.

Sorry, no wiring diagram for 808 but I have the 77 SP which shouldnt be that much of a difference. LMK

I haven't seach too hard for the parts for the convertion,
I got a Ford 8.8 and a GSL-SE rear end that am planning to install but I havent made up my mind of wish one to use, also, Time and money is slowing me down!!!
No to hijack you thread, but if you were to rewire you complete car, which kit will you use?
