Do I need Rx2 oil pan for 1980 12a into rx2?

Hi guys and girls. Can anyone confirm or deny? As the title says Do I need the original twin dizzy oil pan to fit my 80 12a into my Rx2 sedan? Or can I just reverse 80 pan? I dont think the bolt holes line up. I know an Rx2 uses a reverse pickup at the back end of the motor and have that part covered. thanks ozzy

you need the oil pan, you do not need the ft cover, you may need to find a 74 Rx2 tranny or a bell housing from a 74-78 ribcase tranny, if I remember right the bolt pattern is slightly different on the older engine so the tranny won't bolt up to a newer 12a. Wacky would know for sure he has done this several times.

79 Tranny from an SA will will bolt up and work just fine...Gotta member that the auto's and manny's from duce have top mount starters...

Swaping a 79 tranny from an SA will relocate the starter to the bottom, save you time and headache in the long run...

yea i know it will relocate the starter but i also thought that there was something weird about the 2 dizzy bellhousing bolt pattern. Being in Iraq I can't just run to the shop and look at one. I do know that you will need to massage the tranny tunnel just a little with a sledge so the starter fits nice though.

Ozzy, if you know what parts you're looking for, shoot me a PM. I've got two complete twin-dizzys torn down (minus one water pump) and one top-mount tranny.

I know that 73 RX-3s got the bottom mount starter twin-dizzy, not sure if the RX-2 did. In 74 everything was bottom mount and single dizzy, but you didn't state what year your car is. I'd suggest downloading your parts manual HERE and be mindful of build dates and chassis numbers. It'll tell you when certain changes were made, and you can know what you're looking for.

i know that auto rx2 have a bigger trans tunnel than the manual rx2.

OZZYINCALI 05-26-10 11:23 AM

Im a little confused guys. all this talk about trannies and starters fitting. Im using a 1980 engine and trans and the only issue I heard I should have is the hump on the oil pan has to be at the back of the engine because the Rx2 has the "banana" crossmember. Sa shifter should even pop out of the original hole. So basically all I need is the O.G twin dizzy pan and oil pick up and walla?

The question is which tranny you have. If you have a top-mount tranny for an early twin-dizzy, you won't have any provision for a starter once you drop the 80 engine in. Prior to your previous post, you hadn't stated that you were using an 80 tranny.

Yes, all you need is a twin-dizzy oil pan.

My previous rx2 had a 84 Mazda rx7 engine and the original auto trans with the top mount starter,I think you should be fine cause the top mount starter bolts up to where there is usually a metal cover on the rear steel, and the original trans should have the opening for where the starter engages.just get an original rx2 oil pan and oil pick up and you should be fine.or try reversing the rx7 12a oil pan and slot a couple of the holes on it or re drill, depending on how far they are off.If you are using a SA trans you should be fine also, you might have to bang the trans tunnel a little for the clutch fork to clear.the shifter should be in the same location as the stock trans.some one correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah sweet.thanks to all for the info. I was pretty sre thats all I needed I have learned its better to ask here then to tear shit down and hit a snag. sorry I forgot to mention the tranny. dont know why anyone wold wanna keep the 4 speed trans. anyone have a pan and pick p they wanna sell?

I seem to recall something mentioned in the past about reversing a GSL-SE oil pan fitting fine, but it's been ages. Don't have any lying around to compare with on my BP RX-2 either, but I'm sure someone else who's done it recently will chime in. That may have been for a 13B swap into a '2 though, sorry I'm old and can't remember exactly.

yep mike you are old and can't member correct that is only on the 13B swap out..... but that is ok cause I am old also and unless i look at the stuff I can't remember either

you dont need to look for a RX-2 12-A oil an. Use the RX-7 12-A oil pan but flip it around. On the rear, you will need to drill extra 1-2 holes and slot some of the existing holes (using a dremmel or similar). The only trick you have to do is to roughen and use a nail punch to add some dents on the mating surface so that the silicone will stay. Yes, no need to buy a factory oil an gasket

for the oil pick up tube, you can use the ones from a 12-A and mod it. chop chop and weld. its not hard to do. Or you can use the 2nd gen. same thing for the mount, be sure to make the mating surface rough and make your own gasket. this is to ensure that the motor doesnot suck air instead of oil. It has been a few years since I worked on RX-2s so I cant remember exactly.:lol:

Thanx WacDonalds! may just mod my pan if no one comes through with the rx2 pan for me. Im just going to mod my pick up cut a couple of 45 degree angles and she'll be right as rain mate.

Anyone gonna sell me a pan?

Is your 74 a twin dizzy motor or a single? the twin dizzy pan has 2 sensor holes and 1 drain plug. I believe single dizzy has 1 BIG sensor and drain plug hole. lmk if your motor was twin dizzy and is the 2 sensor type. thanks
