In NZ they are more common than most RX's and as such now equal aprox the early RX numbers at most mazda rotary events.
In comparison RX-7's of any gen only make up almost 50%.

I agree that rotary converted GLCs or 323s belong in the RX community.

They were not all that common even when new. My dad bought an '80 GLC wagon new and I learned to drive on it. It was lightweight but had no power at all (58 hp or so, I forget...). Also highly rust-prone anywere road salt was used. We washed it and took great care of it but it had severe rust issues after 9 years and 89,000 miles. I'll bet most of the cars that survived are on the West Coast. I always liked the goofy upkick in the wagon's roof that was stolen from the AMC Gremlin.

My first car was an '85 FWD GLC. I believe the 1.5 L 4-cylinder engine put out a dismal 69 hp. Not much to love about those cars but the gas mileage and cool backwards tilting hood.

that 2 door is so dope...

a little history that i know....

the GLC/323 was built on the floor pan of the 808/RX-3. yes RX-3. thats why the rotary swaps are sooo easy. just the cross meber is needed from a RX-3. the 5 or 4 speed bolts right up and can use the factory drive shaft. mabye not the best choice enless it a 12a.

it came from factory with:
70hp 1.4L inline 4
5 or 4 stick, i think there was a auto to...
2 and 4 door hatches have rwd till 81.
wagons till 85.
fwd was used after 81.
bugeye was used in 79. then the rectangle lights were put on in 80.
the weight of the wagon was about 1800lbs so im told.
hatches should be lighter, duh.
hood opens forward, and the wagons had a little bump, "deck-lid-spoiler", on the end of the roof.

Awesome car.

Don't forget the '85-89 AWD Turbo 143hp version. I used to want one of those to turn into a rally car.

i couldn't agree more! i've always loved these 323 coupes. my aunt had one and i have many fond childhood memories of it. if i could put together an older piston Mazda and convert to rotary now, it would be either a 323 coupe or wagon, a 2-door RWD 626 or a B2000/B2200.
