average guys 4 rotor build
Ok so a while back i was doing a machinist apprenticeship and i thought why not do something with these new skills. So i thought ive always liked rotors so why not build one. After a bit of research i settled on the idea of "it has to be a 4 rotor". Months of research and finally i decided i dont have the funds to do it how i want it so i will do one on the cheap and see what happens. Here are the results. Im sorry i didnt document it better and its kinda the finished product but this is what a cheap 4 rotor costs and how it was made.
Heres a run down of my costs making my 4 rotor. Note i made the center gears and ecc shaft and sump etc. Dont forget you also need a computer to run it all and good enough cooling etc. The costs are in nzd and the engine bolts strait into a s3 rx7 with out modifying anything but the front radiator and oil cooler location
2x 13b s4 n/a engine 1500$ each.
New 3mm seals, o rings, oil seals etc 2000$
Computer to run it. 1000$ - though it doesn't work. need a new one.
Coils x4 75$ each.
Plugs if you don't have any 25$ each
Leads 160$
This is basically what i paid for now this is what ive done.
Grind plates, Make thru bolts and nuts. Make two center stat gears. Balanced shaft. Modified for direct oil lube too two more center bearings. Modified ecc shaft. New sump. PP port housings. Make new intake manifold. New coils-dual tower wasted spark plus 8x11mm leads. Modified front plate for direct oil injection. Now im writing this in a rush and am sure ive missed some stuff but if you cant do all this your self i recommend paying the 10k nzd for the ppre.co.nz kit and then a further 3k roughly for two engines and 2k for seals and very soon you will have a worthwhile engine.
Now not to mention putting the engine together the man hours it takes and with out the right tools etc this can be very frustrating and time consuming.
Any questions welcome. Photos attached. Sorry about the quality my dog ate my camera. I have more. Sadly the megasquirt computer i brought is having real trouble sustaining spark for some reason it drops spark randomly on coils 3 and 4 and sometimes 2. I think its the igniters. So i havent been able to run it very long. Can anyone point me in the direction of some good ignition set up. Cheers

center gear
More photos. My main drive behind choosing to do a quad rotor was i love the sound but also because so many people said it can never be done on a budget, so i aimed to prove them wrong so others could follow in possibly my footsteps. It is achievable. But will never be the 1000hp beast we all want. But if you want to do it just know you can. It doesnt cost an arm and a leg. It just takes time. blood, sweat and yes even some tears haha. Dropped a gearbox on my head and made my eyes water. Long story. But if you want to then have a go at making one. I as well as other on this forum are more then willing to help. Cheers

Haha thanks man. Yea ive met a few guys like that. Some who even told me i was dreaming. Untill they see the photos then they shutup fast. Ive got more photos. Im going to try to find some ive missplaced. It sucks i didnt take many of when i was actually making the stuff. Never even crossed my mind except for a couple i did take. Still got the car and the engine. Is still a work in progress. The ecu i got to run it has given me nothing but trouble and ive finally decided to give uo on it and buy a new one, havent even been able to drive the car yet because of it. But yea when its done im thinking i will sell it and make a 12a turbo into a 12a x2 quad rotor twin turbo haha just for fun. or a six rotor. My work mate reckons i should just go all out. Just a dream at this stage.

slack
Sorry man been a bit slack on updates. Its so cold here at the mo its hard to get outside and work on it haha. Anyways i threw the megasquirt computer out and have made my own dizzy to run it. Have a rough mock exhaust set up fairly rough to turn it over and try start it. If it works will get a proper one made. Hopefully this dizzy will solve my timing problems. Anyways engine is back in the car and here are some photos of the dizzy. A bit overbored with the capscrews i know. Also radiator and oil cooler are mounted. Made the mounts for that. I know its all fairly standadr but atleast i have something now to start it and a quick spin. Cheers

awesome build there.
I'm considering to build a 4rotor some time soon or buy a 3 rotor.
I think the four rotor is more rewarding though.
Do you think you can find sponsors that will give you a free computer because you're undertaking such a massive task?
Best of luck to you mate, i'd love to see you achieve the goals you've set yourself
