74 rx4 steering column bushing

the steering wheel on a 74 rx4 im working on has up and down play in it, like the shaft the steering wheel is bolted to is flopping around inside the steering column housing. i haven't taken it apart, but will the steering column bushing that fits in a 79 rx7 work in the rx4 and fix the problem? thanks for the help

yes but you may have to turn the outside down to fit the column tube. You can also use an FB column bearing.
pretty common problem with these old cars

the best would be a derlin bushing/sleeve so if you can and have a machine shop nearby just have them make you one !! the OEM will wear out quickly again as it sees a fair bit of lateral stress since we have a steering box, a derlin bushing will allow you to add a bit more length as well since its a tailored piece.

Costas that does sound like a good idea, unfortunately I don't know of a shop near that would do that though, if you were willing to make them though I would surly buy a few from you.

I used a 79-80 Rx7 bush for my 73 Rx2. Works great. Just put a little grease on it or it will squeak and drive you nuts. Should still be available from Mazda for $20.
