73 rx3 goon

Saved from a field in the mountains where it sat for 35 years. Here's a pic right before I plucked it out. Getting ready to move it, I need some tires for the rear. I was looking for some rims with no luck. Getting ready to tear into it. The goon has the original 12a twin dizzy & four speed with original 26,000 mi. but has been sitting. I'll get a build thread going when I start working on this bad baby.. I have several projects going on at the same time so progress is slow until the rain completely stops.. thanks for all the info you guys have been giving me so far, I need all I can get being this is my first rotary car..
Thanks, Greg

nice!!

Redrumls 03-20-17 11:05 PM

Thanks, can't wait to get started on it.. I'll probably be the only on in the Central Valley in Cali with an rx3 goon. Still haven't located a windshield yet, extremely hard to find. I have a buddy in LA that says he can track one down for me, I have my fingers crossed! He sold me the extremely hard to find parts for a 72 corona mx22 I needed. I'm stoked! Rescued a couple of rare beauties, now time to get busy!

Redrumls 03-21-17 12:07 PM

Siraniko, I'm in the hunt of an elusive front windshield for my goon.. if you hear of one for sale Lmk... this windshield is ranking to be one of the hardest part to locate for me personally so far.. I love the challenge!
Thanks, Greg

Just on the pass side fender & hood. The fender I can fix(I think), the hood I'm going to toss.
For sitting so long it's not to shabby. Believe it or not but the goon has 29,579 original miles.. it does..

I'm in the hunt for a front windshield, hood & possibly a fender.

Still sporting the original blue plates with the original dealership frame.. cool... I hope DMV lets me keep the blue plates but I doubt it...

It is amazing that the body held up so well. If it were here, in the northeast, the tin worm would have eaten it all up by now. Good luck finding the windshield. Someone, somewhere there is a windshield. If you are persistent, you will find it.

I do believe the miles. Why is it called twin dizzy? I only see one on the motor, but I do see 2 coils like I have?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy bringing it back to life. Please let us know when you start it for the first time!!!

Good luck

Rich

redlightrich 03-24-17 10:18 AM

Disregard the twin dizzy question. I can see what you mean now. Also, is the hood easy to find? It looks to be bent on the right side, but otherwise not so bad. A good metal guy could fix that if nothing else was available.

The floor on the right side looks great!! I am amazed on the condition overall.

Good luck

Rich

Redrumls 03-24-17 11:12 AM

Thanks, Rich. I was amazed too after I cleaned it up and started checking it out. The hood is rusted, I don't know how it got so rusted underneath but it's toast. The windshield is proving to be difficult to find but I am persistent.. I'll find one. Hehe. I've put out an APB on it.

Fast Forward 03-25-17 01:27 AM

I was told that you can use the blue plates but is considered vanity plates and as such has additional charges. Worth it you aren't paying new car prices for registration I suppose.

RotaryEvolution 03-25-17 10:11 AM

i believe you can ask to keep the original plates and plate numbers with the vehicle. back in the day that wasn't an issue, they didn't hand out new plates unless you REALLY needed them.

Fast Forward 03-25-17 10:28 AM

It depends, if the registrations in relatively current (within 7 years I think) and the original plates had be kept in the DMV system. If the car had "newer" plates issued then you'll need to pay the vanity plate charges yearly from that point forward. That's how I understand it. I could be completely wrong.

Redrumls 03-25-17 10:36 AM

On my 64 nova that had been out of the DMV system they didn't let me keep my black plates on it.. I argued with them with no luck. I think if the number is not really being used they'll let you use it but I'm not really sure...

Need help identifying these pulleys I found in the car & wondering if I could use the original mirror that was laying in the back..? Is here a way I can fix my it? They took the pumpkin out of the rear diff too. I found it in the back with the driveline and brake drums.. I'll have to figure out why..;)
Thanks, Greg

Does anyone have a wire diagram or a site where I can look at one.?
Sounds like a dumb question but I don't know where the power for the motor comes in from? I wanted to hook up a battery to see what works. They cut the ground but I can see where it was. I think the positive goes to the starter but from there, idk. Someone took the starter apart & I see the wire hanging. I want to know what wire or wires go to the car so I can check lights, gauges etc.
Thanks, Greg

Is it an 808 or rx3? 808's are non-rotary if I'm not mistaken... I followed a build of an 808 goon that the owner converted over to a rx3, rotary goon. The reason I held on to the goon & didn't sell it because it's cool & an rx3 rotary.

I just started my vacation.. stoked! Now I can finally work on some of my projects.. rx3 goon is 2nd on the list. My 64 nova is in the middle of a full restoration so I need to finish that off. I'll have some update pics soon of the progress on the goon. Here's a few I took today.

so far, my plans are to try and starts it.. that way I know if I have to pull the motor & have it gone through. This is my first rotary so this is all new to me.. it's a cool & unique wagon & I would love to get it back on the road! I have a 72 510 wagon I got got back on the road & now enjoy carving through the mountains where I live.
I haven't worked on it in a while, I have a few projects I'm working on.. some of the parts for the rx3 are a lot more difficult to locate & more expensive.. I finding out that if it's "rx3" the price doubled.. just taking my time with it. Hopefully I'll have some update pics soon. I appreciate the forum & all the questions they have helped this rotary newbie..
thanks, Greg

Here's a pic of the motor.. this is how it look when I bought it, just cleaned up. It has been sitting since 82. Getting ready to take the carb off to put some mmo in it.

Here's a pic of the intake with the carb off... a lot of stuff inside of the intake.. I had to get my shopvac in there to get all that crap out of the intake.. not looking good.. I'm thinking it's going to have to be gone through...

Cleaned up with the mmo in the intake.. going to let it sit.. gave the motor a tug with a breaker bar from the crank pulley bolt.. didn't budge a bit... froze good.. I'll give it a few weeks but just probably going to pull the 12a & figure out what I'm going to do. I want a running rx3 wag! Soon

Through for today... lmk what you guys think & what would you do... this is my first rotary Powered car so any suggestions or ideas are very appreciated..
I want this rotary wagon running side by side with my 510 wagon.. I dig the wags & I think they are cool & practical.

Redrumls 08-21-17 04:23 PM

There's been a few guys saying I should swap out the twin dizzy 12a for a new version of the 12a because of the scarcity of twin dizzy internal parts. I was a little bummed out, was hoping to rebuild & run the twin dizzy 12a..
what suggestions or input do you guys have.. all your input is very appreciated.. you know you guys have a lot of experience & seen a whole lot of builds.. I'm new to the game and want to learn.
thanks, Greg

Picked up a gas door and a few little parts I needed from a friend on another forum. The goon is almost complete, just need that elusive front windshield..
I might have one soon, I'll find out in a few weeks. Looking for good running gear.. hopefully have this goon up and running soon..
Greg

Redrumls 10-22-17 09:31 PM

Pulled the 12a & 4spd.. going to pull this motor apart to see what's locking it up.. going to work on the engine compartment & look for a replacement motor.
