5 spd for RX-2 - SHIFTER LOCATION
 

Does anyone have a table or something that shows which trannys keep the stock shifter location and which move it backwards?

I have an 84 5 spd in mine and the shifter location is about 4 inches rearward of the stock location. I ended up cutting a hole in the floorpan, notching my console for e-brake clearance and sliding the entire console back 4 inches. Not too noticable but I don't get heat to the middle of the car anymore since the console doesn't mate up with the heater core any longer.

Also, my shift lever is quite short - if it was in the stock location it would be so low I'd really have to stretch to shift. Are there longer shift levers that I can swap in in the event I can relocate the shifter forward to it's original home?

the pre-81 shifters will work, they have a smaller ball on the end and use that nylon bushing. how were u planning on relocating it? i cut and shortened everything neccessary on the '83 tranny i used in my rx3, moving it back to stock location. i wanted the short shifter, that's why i did mine this way. from what i've read, it's also possible to swap the tail housing and neccessary pieces and go that route using the early shifter.

I have an 85 trans in my 2 and had the same problems you mentioned, the shifter being too low and coming thru th efloor 4 inches further back. Personally I like the shifer in the further back location so I welded up the original hole and made a nice new one for th eneew trans. As far as the shifter being too low mine was because of the slave cylinder being on the top of the trans and the engine/trans having to be on an angle for it ti fit. I modified the firewall with a little notch for the slave and put everything up where it is supposed to be. I know that wont fix your heat distribution but you might want to look into the angle the trans is on for the lenth of your shifter. By the way you will have to make a custom trans cross member. Imade mine with a piece of flat stock and some angle iron, fits nice and looks good...and strong !

I had an engineer chop the shifter extension on the gearbox to make it fit the standard RX3 length.

My RX-2 had an Automatic Tranny, which supposedly gave me a slightly larger trans tunnel. I had ZERO clearnace issues with the tranny or the slave cylinder. I didn't have to notch anything to get it all hooked up.

I didn't have to use a new mount either - I simply elongated the holes in the cross member and made some "half-moon" washers to get it all buttoned up properly. If I can borrow a digi-cam I should crawl under the car and snap some photos of how it all turned out.
