1977 RX-3 New Project

4 Attachment(s)
A good friend of mine located this 1977 RX-3 for me. Preparing a divorce lawyer as we speak. The body is solid with some surface rust. Will be needing some misc. parts. Definately in need of an interior. Plans are as follows. 13B 4Port with small bridge. Lighten rotors, pinned and balanced. Color will stay the same for now. Will need an interior as I said before. If I'm not mistaken this is an SP. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Nice starting point since it came with a full exhaust, carb and suspension.

nice find buddy

Technically it did not come with a full exhaust. Just the headers. No drive shaft. Disc all around and of course No interior. I will be hitting this forum hard for parts. Already purchased an intake from a forum member. Going with 48 or 51 IDA weber down draft. I am really trying to stay within a budget. I built the RX-2 from the ground up and blew my budget several times over. I learned from that build and will stay focused........I hope.LOL

Going 12-A or 13-B, if 12-A, use the mikuni for now, use 12-A tranny, depending on your diffy, you can extend a 12-A driveshaft, and use use RX-7 front seats. These will let you get by until you have the rest of interior. Take your time but concentrate on getting it running. if you start rushing, you will be outside your budget. Been there, done that many times

Just noticed your going with 13-B bridge but you got my point

Great project you've got there.
Keep us posted.

Will the RX7 1st gen seats be a direct fit or will I have to replace the rails? I do have RX7 seats in pretty decent shape. My priority is to get the car running before anything. The cosmetic portion of it will come slowly.

Siraniko 07-18-12 12:45 AM

You need RX-3 stock front seat rails and need a little massaging to mount FB seats to Rx-3 rails. You can mod the first gen seat rails but requires too much tweaking

light are from an rx3SP, nameplate is also, check on the Registration tag and see the registration number S124 and if says RXSSP inside the hood. Nice car I am working on one myself getting it ready will post pictures late on.

Nice project you have there :) Is the board behind the back seat standard? I haven't seen one before. I'm building an SP replica myself, good luck with the progress.

864angel112, pm sent regarding SP parts.

Yea that's what I thought, the tabs holding it in place would be there for that reason. I'm just not sure if our Aussie spec cars had them. In my experience, our cars had a black plastic sheet, like cardboard and about 4mm thick, in the boot/trunk side instead of inside the cabin.

If I'm not mistaken, the older ones have cardboard with fiberglass insulation in the back as well as black plastic sheet but beginning in 76, mazda replaced it with a sheet metal. the time when a ford pintos were blowing up after they get rear ended? I wasnt around then so I could be wrong

riverseine 07-20-12 10:54 AM

That's affirmatve on the 76. Mine has a body color piece of stamped sheet metal between the rear seat and fuel tank.
