gerbraldy 11-27-04 05:10 PM

yes it 100%, they sell adapter plates to use the VW tranny.

bdrx-7 11-27-04 05:14 PM

thats cool. hes planning on puttin a carb on it 2 so it should b bad.

Fitness Stain 11-27-04 05:57 PM

there was a link floating around here somewhere to some guys site that had done this

pretty interesting

J-Rat 11-27-04 06:15 PM

There was one at 7stock.. 13BT powered.

1RevvinFC3S 11-27-04 06:55 PM

I've also heard of Porsche Boxer 6 motors being dropped into them. Pretty badass. I personally would rather have the 2000cc air cooled VW engine because power is damn near unlimited on them.

vintagespeed 11-27-04 10:05 PM

Kennedy (www.kennedyeng.com) makes the adapter/flywheel he'll need to connect the 13B to the VW trans. The kit is $400.

I'm in the process of getting my 13B EFI S4 running in my '63 VW Notchback, bolted to a '65 Porsche 911 5 speed tranny. Once it's running it'll be time for forced induction.... :D

there you go..... a 13b in a baja

Urchin 11-28-04 10:22 PM

there was one with a turbo at SevenStock this year. I tried adding a picture, not sure it worked.

BGH 11-29-04 08:11 AM

Heres one at rotary reliability and racing website

Dltreezan 11-29-04 09:27 AM

so if this is the case it would eb the same with a Karmann Ghia right?

Aaron Cake 11-29-04 09:35 AM

Didn't I just move this topic? Moving back to Other Rotary.

yup, Ghia's are pretty much the same as the bug, engine and transmission wise.
Figuring out where to put radiator is the hard part.

mortenf 11-30-04 01:40 AM

Friend of mine built one once, with a turboed 13B. It was lethal..

He used a Porsche 914 gearbox, top speed was about 180-190 MPH. He then found out that a bug is shaped as a wing, when doing a 170 MPH run down the freeway. The front wheels were barely touching the ground. See link beelow to watch the car in its glory!

The Ghia is a good choice because of the engine compartment size, it's huge. As for the radiator, I'm using a Jeep Cherokee radiator because they're short & wide as opposed to square like most. The Jeep rad. is sized for a 4.0L and should cool the rotary fine. It'll fit above the transmission to the underside of the body with a pair of electric fans. I've fit this in a '58 bug so it'll fit a Ghia (or my Notch) very well. If it cools well enough there wont be the nasty front hood holes & other butchery that others have had to do.

MORTNF Do you know the guy personally or? I ask this because my next step is a turbo/fi 13b. The only problem of the conversion is the wiring for me. Im not a wiring guru, but Im definately interested in knowing a first hand wiring schematic or explanation of whats involved. Ive done some searching on Fi turbo motors in first gen rx7s and of course you need the engine and full engine harness/computer etc. and at the end of the day, the guy was only using4 or 5 wires from the computer/wiring harness. It would just be nice to have a heads up before I step 2 feet in without a rope!

Anyhelp from vintage or mortnf or anyone for that matter would be appreciated. Im sorta hi jacking the post, but the post has been answered!!! CHEERS!!!

mortenf 12-02-04 07:22 AM

I know him personally. The Bug was built a couple of years ago, but is now sold to another guy in his workshop (simtechracing), and currently has no engine.

I`ll pop down to the workshop one day and see if i can take pictures of the wiring, but i dont know how much is left. I think he used a old Haltech for the FI, not exactly sure, but i`ll ask him. ( the bug was built before i met him)

In the meanwhile, have a look at the RX2 on www.simtechracing.no, some of the site is on English, some is Norwegian. The RX2 uses Haltech, if you look closely at the engine bay, you might get some helpful hints.

You could also send him a mail to the emailadress on his site!

Unfortunately, Im not really willing to go stand alone for the computer. I would like to use the stock rx7 wiring/computer. Stand alone system is just to costly. Hmmm

rotaryrudy 12-03-04 06:10 PM

its very common to see a 13b carbed in a old school bug

vintagespeed 12-05-04 06:37 PM

The wiring isn't very complicated once you tear into the harness. All the sensors are negative switched from the ECU and once you run power through the harness from the main relay you're gtg. You can basically ignore any outputs going to the dash unless you're going to wire them in. Lookup ECU pinout in the search box and you'll find the FSM pinout diags. I used these to modify my harness.

To go turbo you're best bet is probably to find a complete TII motor, computer, harness. I'm planning on turbo'ing my Notch once it's torn down & ported next year and I'll be running a stand alone because it's not really doable on a N/A without. They're pricey but well worth it with the real-time end diagnostics and telemetry, plus with the data logging you can tune your engine online. Pretty slick.

MountainDew67 12-06-04 01:57 AM

Your right about the programming and tuning online etc. I feel like one step at a time is all I can handle really. Im use to driving old Muscle cars ( this year alone ive bought and sold 65 prostreet cuda tubbed chassis,70 buick gs 455 clone,67 satellite 383,71 satellite,73 dart sport 340 4 speed)and fuel injection and such, well, I havent played with much. So my thinking is, once I got T2, I can make a decision on what I want at that point. Im thinking a stock t2 would be really fast behind a bug. Not to mention, anything related to smog would be gone and 3ft exhaust then muffler will probably wake her up as well...From that point, if anymore horsepower is needed, Ill have to play the game of forking out more money for mods and stand alone. I so cant wait to hear your updates in the future!

mortenf 12-06-04 03:37 AM

Talked to Simtech this weekend, and he recommended a Haltech. Thats what he useed on his bug. The manual that came with the system was easy to follow and if you have some wiring experience you should be just fine!

vintagespeed 12-07-04 12:10 AM

Yeah I've been researching the stand alones lately and I think I'm going to do this before doing the turbo. The benefits from the standalone and proper tuneing should make it well worth the dough and once I get it all figured out it'll be much easier to add a turbo later. It's a pricey buy in but if you get something that can be upgraded later it's a big plus. I'm gonna go with the Wolf 3d system I think.
