13B 1970 Porsche 914-4?
 

ok my fatherwas thinking about doing this since we have a 1970 Porsche 914-4 this the 1.7L engine in it and we are rebiulding thecar from the ground up. we where thinking a 13B from a 2nd gen would be a great thing to swap in i want to know everyoneonees thoughts on this matter. here is a pic of a 914-6 which was the 6 cylinder model.

the 914-4 that we have onlyhas 85hp. so my dad and i where talking about swaping a 13B in it. even the 160hp from the N/a Series 5 would be insane in a car that weighs alittle bit less than a AE86 Corolla, is midengine rearwheels drive, and already handles great...

Nice car, it wouldn't be the first rotary Porsche, it will be a nice conversion.

A friend of mine is in the process of converting one as we speak here.

Mmmmm A rotary powered 914.

Hell... even a 914-6 would be an amazing car. I still think I'd rather have the 914-re or whatever you would choose to call it. ;)

As rotary geek of course I would say go for the 13b. But if you ever sale
this car down the road it would have a much higher resale value if you put
porsche flat six or cough cough v8 enginge in it.

Porsche 914 with a rotary is one of my dream cars lol.

I have a '74 914-1.8. Motor is very lame, but reliable. I want to put a rotary in it, but installing a cooling system tears the car up a bit. Installing a 911 6 would put the drivetrain under a lot more stress. The NA rotary is a great way to increase power without increasing torque enough to break stuff. Tough call. I feel your pain.

My advice is to think long and hard about the cooling system first. Installing the motor is the easy part. Kennedy Engineering (http://www.kennedyeng.com/mazda.htm) has all the parts you need to adapt it. The kit is comonly used to install rotaries in the Formula Mazda (http://www.starmazda.com/cars.htm) open wheel race cars.

I would go for it, always been in the back of my mind as well, dad used to have a 71 914, neat car, too bad they rust horribly. Any thoughts on what you would do as far as a transmission/differential/axles setup is concerned? Other considerations are the fact that the porsche is air cooled, you will have quite a bit of plumbing to do to accomodate the rotaries oil cooler and water cooling system.. Still could be a real fun car.

I've seen 12a powered Porshe Speedster replicas. Some company in the east or mid-west made them in the eighties. They pop up on eBay evbery once in awhile. If you can find some info on those it might make the conversion easier.

Upgrade the drivetrain, install an S4 TII. With minor mods, you can have a reliable and civil 240-250 hp.

ive seen a sight thay sells adapter plates for rotaries to most german air cooled and water cooled motors. let me google to see if i can find it again.

This reminds me of when I bought my first RX7 back in May 1978 -I pulled next to a 914 that the then new RX7 would handle quite easily but when the light turned green he stomped me and then I noticed it was a 914-6. These were quite rare and the 914-6 sticker price was slightly higher than a 911 when new! The rotary914 is not that uncommon a swap-do a "Porzda" search. Or ya could just stuff a V8 in it -seems to be getting popular with the 3rd gen crowd lately-there's an express line at the psyche ward for those doing that!

i found out from my father the current drivetrain can only handle about 200hp so im thinking just get a S5 TII motor and swap it into my N/A and take my N/A and put it in the 914.

Also would the taillights from a 1st gen rx-7 fit the 914 cause replaceing them with stocks is not an options at $250 a peice for stock taillights. i think first gen rx-7 taillights might work than or we might mod fsome integra taillights onto it...

if you use a 2nd gen engine youll need a 1st gen front cover and oil pan. i you could use the 2nd gen mounts but its a hell of a lot easyer to use the 1st gen front cover. when you get the kit from kenedy, get the pilot bearing and seal from him, his prices is actualy one of the cheepest ive found. and fyi its just a standard rx-7 pilot bearing and seal. were still braking in the clutch, but the car is lots more fun now!!!!!

that would be a lot of work. 1st gen lights are taller. look on evilbay.
as far as the tranny it can realisticly hold a bit more than 200hp. autoatlanta sells a beefup plate that increases the power holding capasity by a fair amount. the other option would be to get an early 911 tranny. bonus with the 911 tranny is you get lsd. down side is price cause you have to buy the tranny, buy a special shifter housing so it will bolt up and you have to open up the case and swap the diff to the other side(no money just more labor)

From a 914 lover from way back... IMO, a 911 engine in a 914 is the equivilent to a 3-rotor into an RX-7...pretty much the ultimate swap for the lover of that model of car (especially if it's something crazy like a 3.6L or something!) Other Porsche guys will swoon over a nice 914-6, like we would a Cosmo powered FD.
I LOVE my RX-7 and the way it sounds, revs and puts out butter-smooth power; but I'll never put a V8 into it because Mazda never made a V8.

That said, I'll bet a TII powered 914 would be a ball to drive!

EDIT: And find a set of used Porsche tail lights!!!

i would love to do this swap myself. if the TII gets wrecked or another space opens up for a car. 13bT 914. keep the motor stockish to make sure thing dont break. Then again, i could make a stronger transmission...

I would really like to see a rotary, but you could always do a subaru motor, a flat six out of an SVX would be SICK!!
