What's the weather really like in WA?
OK I live in the burbs of Washington DC now... and the weather here kinda bites (too much cold and crappy weather in the winter). My buddy is getting a job working for Microsoft and might offer me one working for him there in Redmond, WA.
The question is... is it really as crappy and rainy and depressing in Washington state as people say? Looking at weather.com, it seems that Redmond actually has better weather in some ways than DC does. 1 - Washington DC is warmer in the summer, but also colder in the winter. 2 - Washington DC gets about 3-4 inches of precip every month, Redmond gets between about 1 and 6 inches per month with more rain in winter and drier summers. So what's up with the weather? Sucky? Good? Oh yeah, and how are the cops around there? I like to speed a LOT. Thanks, Brian |
May-September: The best place in the world to live. Beautiful greenery everywhere, gorgeous views, every outdoor activity except the beach. Except for a week to two weeks of 80s and even occasional 90s spikes, the temps are in the 70s.
October-April: 40 degrees and overcast. Drizzle likely. If it's below freezing, there will be no precipitation, because the jetstream isn't carrying any moisture and/or the Olympic mountain range on the peninsula is screening what moisture there is. This only applies to western Washington, and really just the Puget Sound region. East of the Cascades is a totally different country. -dave Western Washingtonian since 1991 |
you're crazy I live on alki beach and all summer long we were at the beach! this place was 80 all summer long we went 4 months without rain this year.
|

Well here on the East side the weather is much different. Very dry compaired to the West side of the mountains.
Todays big high is 14 degrees, snow still on the ground frozen...Tonight our big high will be 7 degrees. Doesnt rain here much. Summers are hot and usually between 90-100 degrees. I don't think Cops here are that bad....so far anyway. They are not so nit picky here like the cops on the west side. More open roads and less traffic. |
its around the 30's during the daytime right now, 20's overnight.
cops SUCK in redmond/kirkland (kirkland is close to redmond) only got a warning for having a headlight out, evreything else got me a ticket. but the weather is nice around the summer, especially in redmond... the rain is not that bad at all (of course I'm used to it) spring is nice, theres consiferably more rain in fall and winter. |
it sounds nice and warm down in Washington.
|
all these long responces about the weather in washington... i can sum it up in one word
CRAP :) |
Hey but that抯 why it抯 soo green around here. Because it always rains.
In the summer the weather is nice. Usually around 70-80F and some months even hotter. The winter is long and a touch cold. We sit at about 30F right now. I found that this is pretty close to being right in the middle of both extremes with a little too much rain sometimes. However the sites around here are gorgeous because it is so lush and green. |
in Bellevue its 32 degrees, 11:40am yeah and cops are asses....
|
I love it in Wa. I have lived here all 21 years of my life and have nothing to complain about. I have been to quite a few different states on visits and it always makes me glage that I live here.
I have lived in Kent, Tacoma, Federal Way, Olympia and quite frequently visit the east side. IMO Oly is the best, but that is because I am more of a country type of guy. Cops are not asses to me...but then again I do not really speed. We will see when I get my project done...they will probably hate me then. Good luck on the decision!!! Z |
the weather in western WA here is pretty mild. doesnt get over 100, doesnt get below like 20, nothing to crazy in either direction
|
Western Washington has a very moderate climate. The major differences from DC would be no humidity in the summer and less snow/severe temps in the winter. The only downside is the number of overcast/cloudy days.
|
The eastside(Kirkland-Redmond-Bellevue) is a very safe place to live no crime at all but is rather expencive, Washington has really high tax. From May to October the weather is very good 70's with little humidity hardly any rain at all, as far as it raining all the time prolly the last five years have been really dry it has not rained here in over a week. There are a lot of police over here in the citys just get a V1 and drive as fast as you want on the highway. There is some really beautiful scenery lots of parks and lakes and if you enjoy winter sports there are tons of mountains. I personally would take a job at microsoft they take care of there employees well plus you can always find another tech job at smaller companys that are all over and make alot of money. I haven't been to the eastcoast but I already know I want to live here for a long time I love it.
|
it was 21 degrees when I got to work this morning.... WTF?

Sunny and cold here in Redmond.
|
You should probably move here. Mainly because I want a ride in your single turbo bad ass...
But seriously the weather here isnt bad. We had a really really good summer this last year, not too hot, but there was virtually no rain. Maybe 1-3 days i can remember. This winter so far has been pretty dry as well, just colder than normal. It really depends year to year. Plus theres quite a bit of 7 owners out here, and they have some sweet gatherings. Thats a huge plus in my mind. |
Thanks for the feedback... Sounds like it's not as bad as some people say.
If I don't end up at MS, I'm just going to sell all my crap and buy a boat and go treasure hunting all day in the florida keys :) :) |

The only bad thing about the car is that it's an automatic. |
I have visited over 30 states and over 20 different countries around the world.
Washington is still in my top 5 places to live. In the summer time, very few places if any, can come close to the beauty here. Winter time... the mountains are really really nice and loads of fun. Spring time aint bad, winter can be a bit depressing though. Hence why for the past 4 years I've gone somewhere warm and sunny for winter then back to washington for spring and summer. :) But its all based on personal preference I guess... if youre a prude and cant handle a little rain, then youre a wuss anyways and yous houldnt worry yourself with weather, you should worry yourself with other things... like maybe getting a penis. |

You lived in dutch harbor? lol... I hate that place in the winter, but in the summer (when or if it gets sunny, its really really pretty. Then again the whole aleutian chain is really nice in the summer). How long did you live there and whats your name? :)
edit: wait a minute, I believe I talked to you outside the hotel at sevenstock like 2 years ago, and we discussed dutch. Infact, Im sure of it... weeeeiiird. |
dutch harbor has some warm winters compared to the Interior but with it being so much more wetter its pretty damned friged.
i would hate to live there, not enough to do but theres good paying jobs working in the fishing industry. beats the hell out of living in Barrow |
Definetly not much to do there but catch up on drinking skills:beer:, fishing, drinking:beer:, fishing and then drinking:beer: and fishing, then there was the trip to the dump once a week to feed all the eagles. (an awesome experience). I think with Daves drinking skills came fighting skills. Winters are a blast for snowboarding and sledding. Thats basically it for intertainment in lovely Dutch Harbor. I would sell my cars to move back if given the opportunity.
If you want peace from the world...Dutch Harbor is the place to live. |
I dont see how people can live there year round.... it really boggles my mind.
I spend about 4 months a year, spread out over the entire year. After about a month I start to go bonkers ... As for the bars... good luck now, carls is closed down, elbow room was bought out and is now a girlie bar called latitudes and the unisea bar is ... well the unisea bar. |

I've lived all over the world and Puget Sound is where I chose to stay. Temperature is pretty stable, no extremes either way. It rains in the winter, but not hard. Very little snow in the lowlands. One sunny day, winter or summer, and you will see why I stayed.
The problem out here is not the weather...or even the expense. The problem here is the traffic, it's pathetic! And the east side (Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland) is the worst because of the attitude, especially near Microsoft. There's a lot of money on the eastside and they all think they own the road and everyone else should get out of the way of where they want to go. Nobody thinks they have to wait their turn for anything and they will do anything to keep from it. They'll come up to within 1/4 mile of an exit and try to get from the left hand carpool lane to the righthand exit lane, 3 or 4 lanes over and wonder why traffic gets backed up. Or they'll pass you in the right hand exit lane and then try to force you to let them in when they get up to the actual exit. And Lord help you if it rains or snows. Like I said, I've lived a lot of places and these drivers are the absolute worst. Let's see how well this goes over. |
It sucks ass here. I have a bad seal on the passenger door of my Rx7, and everyday I have to towel out the puddle in my passenger footwell. I thought about killing myself all day today. Don't move here!
|
I'm growing gills I think :)
|
I spose I better make a post. It's been a while since I've posted anything.

WA is a green place to live but like everyone else said, the weather is real crappy out here but the cops don't bother me unless I am not watching out for them. You have to keep a good lookout for them otherwise they will bust you.
|
Update: I think I'll be in Redmond for a day or two for interviews in about 2 weeks... I still haven't decided if I'm willing to move cross-country, but they didn't really flinch too much when the topic of salary came up, so maybe they'll make it worth all the trouble for me.
:) |
We're on day 31 of our record of 33 consecutive rain days.
Hope that answers your question. :D |
