Time to Ditch stock Clutch fan?
 

Anyone have Improved City Driving with Electric VS Stock clutch fan? Agian my car is stranded. First is was the Altranator NOW its the fan clutch. Just Spins. Just friggin wont END. I figure i Replace a part every week or two.

I was looking at electric fans at the Junkyard. The Thunderbird Electric fan looks like a monster. But anyone Know if it will fit? I have read a few threads stating the Mazda MPV Fans i think it was fit like a glove. If i am not Mistaken,

I Been running warm for a week or two and Thought it was the thermostat. but I go up a hill. and it runs warm. Cant burn out my New Engine. that would friggin suck..

If anyone has a Fan sitting around. Let me know. I am BROKE for a week or so. So im friggin STUCK

My advice is get another clutch fan. I see them all the time at Pick-n-pull, doesn't seem to be much demand for them. I had lots of trial and error with the cooling in my V8 powered FB, finally solved it with a stock FB fan, driven directly (no clutch). That is not recommended with a rotary because of the high rpm. It is unlikely you will get as much airflow with an electric fan, although certain years of Thunderbird fans are indeed claimed to be the best.

I have owned a LOT of RX-7s in the past 30 years, only had one clutch fan go bad that I can recall.

I think your Right. Infact. My 69 olds rocket 350 had a direct Drive. That thing Pulled air like a hurricane .

I cheated and jammed mine up so the clutch is frozen. She runs cool now

V6 GM Fiero fan works great. Height wise it's perfect but it leaves about a inch gap on each of the sides. I've had mine on for 5 years, two of which I lived in Sacramento, Ca. and had no real issues. There's a WHOLE THREAD dedicated to this subject if you just use the search engine.

That is odd you would over heat or run warm. Fan is pretty much moot at anything above 35mph, as ram air take over the cooling duties, figure in the really low ambient temperature running warm shouldn't be an issue. You may have only gremlins at work.

After 50 plus years of building nearly the same engine, even the General could figure it out.

The rotary engine was invented by a German named Felix Wankel in 1957.

Most electric fans are too small and if you get a correctly sized one they usually aren't installed or wired in properly.

If you can do those steps correctly then go for it.

It is a bad idea to run the fan directly, it will lower your mileage and kill the top end power. Dads Olds didn't turn 7k rpms...

I have never seen a *fan clutch* on a RX7 go bad. Should be able to find one easy.

Nah iv had it. I have no choice but to Ditch this Fan clutch BS. They want 150-170 for a Fan clutch From the parts store. That's Bullsht..


Anyone With an Electric fan laying Around? Give me some quote's if you want

I converted to a black magic electric fan on my FB when I had it. Worked great. I think it was rated around 2200CFM or so, but I forget the model number. The car definitely revved better. the thermostat control on the black magic fan also worked great.

As others stated check a junkyard or the for sale section since 170 is high.
I got an electric fan from the local junk yard but haven't put it on since the lack of power my alternator can put out. This is reason why many still stick with the clutch fan. But I would get once second hand instead of paying 170 personally.

It worked. But I cant drive like i want. I cant rev it. the belt slips, But i knew that before i did it

True. Electric Fan means it would be smart to upgrade to a bigger ALT> But that is also getting Into another can of worms

Wasn't fun sound like a dump truck after 3,000 rpm? :lol: I'm sure your bearings loved the perfectly balanced fan.

Your alternator should be fine unless you use a power hungry fan like a taurus. The real issue is you need a nice strong real relay, fuses, real wiring, a water temp switch, and the knowledge of how to wire it up. Or you can put a switch in there and be in charge of turning it off and on manually, either wasting electrical and engine power at speed, or risking not turning it on when it gets hot blowing a coolant seal.

Ooooorrrrrr you can find a stock fan that someone has taken off and discarded for free or cheap and fix it like you should for once.
