S5 Tii Ecu...

Does anyone near the Olympia area have an extra S5 TII ECU that I might be able to borrow for an hour or so?
I think I have pinned down my problems to my ECU... but I just want to make sure... well at least the timing section of my ECU.

FC/DC 09-02-05 04:48 PM

I thought you had a red S4? did you sell it?

Kouta 09-02-05 04:57 PM

i had a grey auto s4, and yep I sold it... day I sold it the white one wouldn't turn on lol
Kinda sucks now though since the grey one got better gas milage than this one... but this one is also a bit more powerful :p

woundup7 09-02-05 08:23 PM

What going on with your timing.? Unfortunately i don't have an extra ecu.

Kouta 09-02-05 08:48 PM

my leading/trailing split is only about 2 degrees, rather than the 5 is supposed to be. timing light shows primary right on, and trailing to be almost right next to leading. Plus i think my rev thing is due to the ECU advancing and retarding the timing after getting to a certain RPM, just wanted to test and see if my speculations are right.
I am just getting tired of it doing that rev thing all the time... its not as bad as it was at the st. helens thing, but its still there...
Like when i am warming up the car... i have it sit at about 1.5-2k, but it revs from 2k to 2.3k (when i am holding it at 2k... well trying to) and then back down and wont hold a consistant RPM unless i let completely off the gas.
Its not the TPS, i set that right, its not a vaccuum leak... I only have 2 vaccuum lines... so all I can think of now is the ECU... and the 2nd gen section has no idea.

KompressorLOgic 09-03-05 04:39 AM

im having the weird rev thing, from 1500-1700 over and over, mines s4 with s5 block.... mines not ecu related i swaped ecus 3x and they all are doing it... its not my tps either, posibly a vacume leak but it doesnt feel like it.... might be bac related or somthing like that.... iono

when you are shooting the timing, are u jumpering the "initial set" conector first??

Kouta 09-03-05 12:35 PM

Yeah the initial set jumper is in place. I only have 2 vaccuum lines... and no bacv...
I just think it hates me :D

Here is a little more information about my very annoying idle problem....

This is what happens when the LEADING timing is right on the mark (thereby making the trailing off... 1/2 between the marks on the pulley)
--When warmed up it will idle perfectly, no variance, right at 800rpm.
--With clutch OUT (not pressed) if I give it gas it will rev to whatever, then drop to 1.5k rpm then surge from 1.5k to 1.8k rpm.
--With clutch IN (pressed) if I give it gas it will rev to whatever, then drop to 1.5k rpm then surge from 1.5k to 1.8k rpm.
--Also the car has a nice amount of acceleration.

This is what happens when the TRAILING timing is right on the mark (making the leading off)
--When warmed up it will idle perfectly, no variance, right at 800 rpm.
--With clutch OUT (not pressed) if I give it gas it will rev to whatever, then drop back down to 800rpm
--With clutch IN (pressed) if I give it gas it will rev to whatever, then drop to 1.5k rpm then surge from 1.5k to 1.8k rpm.
--Also the car is extremely sluggish on the acceleration.

EDIT: also for reference my vac lines are like in the attached picture

Ok... I took some lil vids of whats going on....

http://home.comcast.net/~kouta/clutchout.AVI
-- After starting car and hitting the gas just a hair it will do this....

http://home.comcast.net/~kouta/clutchin.AVI
--When I press in the clutch it raises it up to that rpm

http://home.comcast.net/~kouta/leadingon.AVI
--This is what the timing looks like with the leading being on... notice it jumping around... (but I have good acceleration)

http://home.comcast.net/~kouta/leadingontrailingbad.AVI
--This is with the leading set to the position above... notice how its off, and how this again is jumping around

http://home.comcast.net/~kouta/trailingok.AVI
--This time the timing is set via the trailing... completely smooth

http://home.comcast.net/~kouta/trailingokleading.AVI
--Look how far off the leading is (i also have horrible acceleration)

To tell you the truth, that sound a lot like an intake leak (based on my experiences chasing your exact same problem on my car). P.S. I've got a couple S5 TII ecu's... too.

How are you checking for vacuum leak. For a quick check you can slowly cover the intake, if it dose have a leak, at some point it should go to normal idle till you unblock the intake. I would then use a spray bottle with water and a little dish soap to spray all around the engine intake system. If there is a leak idle should go back to normal for a few seconds when you spray near the area of the leak; then when you stop spraying the engine will start going up and down in RPM's again after another few seconds. At that point you just start zeroing in on the area with the spray bottle and your hands till you find something.

2 drops of dish soap in a spray bottle of water should be all you need.

Kouta 09-15-05 05:23 PM

Not a vacuum leak, was a combination of my TPS falling out of spec, and misadjusted timing.
Figures it was just the simple things... always check things like 4x with these cars...
I still get the rev thing while warming up, but after its warmed up its just fine, so I guess my TPS just sucks until its hot :D

rmriggin 09-15-05 09:54 PM

Maybe it does have an intake leak (hairline crck maybe) that once it is warmed up it expands and leak goes away. Just an idea though. I would follow spokanerxdude's advice.

Kouta 09-15-05 10:18 PM

i already did that a while ago, couldn't find anything cept for the crack that was on my intake right before the turbo... but i fixed that and it still happened... so as a last resort after driving it around for a while to check the TPS again... i really hate that thing :p
