Need help sourcing something

Hello people,

I am trying to repack my mufflers. Regular stainless steel wool burns out pretty quickly, so I would like to find stainless steel scrubble, looks like a pot scrubber (here is a link - http://www.burnsstainless.com/sm-scrubble.aspx). I can get stainless steel pot scubbers, the problem is it is made out of 400 series stainless steel which does not hold up to the heat. So, what I am looking for is 300 series (like 304) stainless scubble. I can get it from Burns stainless, yet I do not want to pay $39 a pound.

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks JEB

Why not get stainless steel wool? McMaster Carr has stainless steel wool as well as more coarse scouring pads (similar to what you're asking about). You can get a 316 stainless wool reel that is 4" wide, 1/4" thick, and 25 feet long for $46. Or, you can get those scouring pads for about $8 each.

Here's a link: http://www.mcmaster.com/#stainless-steel-wool/=hvt960

I just noticed in your original post you said regular stainless steel wool burns out too fast, then I went and suggested stainless steel wool again, haha. I mis-read, I thought you wrote "regular steel wool". Anyway, McMaster still has the scouring pads, but it doesn't say which series stainless they are.

That all said, if that still doesn't float your fancy, I work in a CNC machine shop and we make stuff out of 300 series stainless all the time all day. We have 55 gallon barrels full of chips that kind of look like that "scrubble"; you could probably have some for free if you wanted to come get them and if you thought they would work. The pictures below are 304 stainless.

This isn't by chance the machine shop off highway 9 is it?

if burnes stainless has it, it may seem like 39 bux a pound is a lot, but isnt a pound of that stuff going to be a really pretty large volume? like will 39 bux be enough for a muffler?

Depending what it is, we might be able to help you out.

If he is doing glass pack style mufflers, it seems like it should be, or at least close. The chart on their website says most mufflers need less than 1 LB each, so unless the muffler is large (or you have more than one), you probably wouldn't need much more than the 1 LB bag. However, if he is doing a chambered muffler of some kind and looking to quiet that down, I'm not sure.

Thanks guys

Claridon - Burns website says I would need 2 pounds per muffler, 4 pounds totally $160. That is a lot less then then one of their rebuild-able muffles, yet more than I would like to pay.

TJ - Thanks for your research, I appreciate the time you spent. Your stainless looks like just about what I am looking for. Where is your shop located? Could I come by and pick some up?

Jesus - come back soon bud, you have a lot of racing to do!

^^^ I will, open house and you are invited to the BBQ when I get back, as long as you show up in the Rotus.

Sending you a PM.

I'd offer to toss some in a bag for you, but I thin it would be best if you came to look yourself. As you can see in the pictures, it comes out in various sizes depending on the cutting tool that is working at the time, so sometimes you get little rats nest balls and sometimes you get long stringy pieces. Sometimes thick, sometimes thin. Lots of all styles though, haha. Our chip recycler just came to pick up on Thursday I think it was, but we should have plenty more. He comes every week because we make so much to recycle, haha.
