My Mom's 1990 GTU Restoration

Well, I had a blog set up for this but my database decided to crap itself for some reason, so I figured I'd just repost it all here.

Starting from the beginning again...

Well I have had the car for a couple of months now, it is a 1990 Mazda RX-7 GTU.

The car needs a lot of love, including donations from several other cars for interior pieces, dashboard, wiring harness, and even the engine needs to be swapped over.

http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7282575_n.jpg

The car was stolen three times before it finally arrived in my driveway, and so the ignition wiring was all torn out and the whole column needed to be replaced.

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5299694_n.jpg

The engine bay as she is right now. It looks so sad without an engine. :(

Well, the dashboard is being pulled out of the donor car.

Compilation of Parts Still Needed:
- 2 Trailing NGK Platinum Spark Plugs
- 2 Leading NGK Platinum Spark Plugs
- 2 New Mazda RX-7 GTU side decals
- 1 K&N OEM Style Air Filter
- Oil Filter
- Shifter Bushings
- New Battery
- Belts
- Waterpump
- Coolant
- etc etc etc

The dashboard is finally into my car! It's been a long time waiting for it, but I finally bugged my son enough to do it on a good sunny day outside.

Now what needs to be done is to finish hooking up the rest of the interior trim and the electrical parts such as the idiot cluster, and the stock cd player.

http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._2378878_n.jpg

Found a few pieces that I need to replace.

This one has 3 of the 4 clips on the bottom of it broken.

http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._8018183_n.jpg

The lid to the armrest is cracked in several places and also will need to be replaced as well.

1MZFE 05-06-10 10:18 PM

We started the day off by taking the battery out of my sons RX-7.

The donor car:

And... we found out that the electrical systems are working! We checked the headlights, the turn signals, etc etc etc, and it all works just fine.

Including the clock even!

http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs035...._6274313_n.jpg

As we checked over the speedometer cable, we saw that the clutch line was also shredded.

Gauge cluster is now plugged in, and trim pieces are now in place.

http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._4576887_n.jpg

Ignition column is in place, and various other pieces as well.

http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._4568443_n.jpg

Steering wheel is hooked up and aligned correctly, as well as various other pieces.

Finished wiring up the harness for the series 5 CD player from a vert that will be in my car.

Is that the red car the ehime had?

Damn thats a great before and after shot!

Getting it done! Nice

1MZFE 05-07-10 10:01 AM

Yeah that's the red car he had, the whole interior is stripped except for front carpet and headliner, and now the engines gone, drivers side door is even gone now.

Just gotta pull a couple of things off her, and she's ready to go to her final resting place possibly. :p

joemaddox 05-07-10 01:46 PM

i'll snag it up, i dont need anything but the shell and the ability to roll it around ;)

Is the frame/core support bent or was it just outer damage?

Did you see the S5 lights on craigslist for 60.00 right by you guys? That would be a nice score :D

That GTU's going to be sweeeeet  !

1MZFE 05-07-10 04:39 PM

Also I picked up some exhaust gaskets, and intake gaskets from Pineapple as well, but for some reason the picture of that got lost somehow. Oh well, always a pleasure to visit the guys down at Pineapple Racing. :D

joemaddox 05-07-10 05:14 PM

looks like fun.. Well let me get the shop cleared out and my back all straighened up and well bring it on it!

1MZFE 05-07-10 05:50 PM

Sounds good Joe! Look forward to seeing you tomorrow, hope we can get something worked out.

Got a little bit of cleaning in on the engine before the rains just started coming in, at least the housings are starting to look nice. :p

joemaddox 05-08-10 11:58 AM

^ score!

thejallenator 05-08-10 12:33 PM

what did it cost ya to get those injectors done? i got a set i need to clean

1MZFE 05-08-10 12:39 PM

They were $100 for all 4, the place is really easy to get to out in Gladstone, I-205 sb, exit 11, take a right off the exit, right onto "first" st, and then its like half a block down. Nice guy there, kinda talkative though. :p

mort2002 05-08-10 11:39 PM

1MZFE 05-10-10 02:53 PM

1MZFE 05-10-10 06:41 PM

Derekcat 05-10-10 06:44 PM

Where's the black again? I see silver/chrome and....."Shiny gray"? ^_-

If you look below... I suppose you could call my wheels "Hyper Black" lol :D
