After a vehicle reaches 30 years of age, you can get it licensed as a
classic/collector vehicle. No more registration . . . no more registration
fees. And, the really nice part . . . no front license plate! I had my '82
licensed this way last year.

ArmyOfOne 11-15-13 03:19 PM

That means it is time for the 83 to become... collectable. lol.

collector vehicle license

This is a great idea if you don't plan to use it for you daily commute, but if a cop sees you driving in the rain during the morning or afternoon commute, you may have trouble convincing him you are on your way to a car show. Before anyone rushes to sign up for this, best read the rules carefully and decide what use you plan for the vehicle. I don't think the cops tend to enforce this very frequently, but there is always the risk you will encounter some enthusiastic guy who has not written enough tickets today.

until recently is was driving my 808 every day with collector plate.the ladies at the dol told me i could only drive it for pleasure lol, that's why i drive it.

TOOSHORT_88 11-15-13 10:19 PM

I was aware of the stipulations when I relicensed it. You are very correct in the
fact that it is not supposed to be used as a daily driver. I only take mine out
during the summer months and only on nice days. Not really worried about the
bulls pullng me over. I also put mine in "storage" status with my insurance for
the winter months, then reinstate it for the summer.

◦May be driven: ◦To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, and antique car club meetings.
◦For testing purposes.
◦For the pleasure of others without compensation.

◦May not be used for regular transportation in the manner of a fully licensed vehicle.

Well the 'for testing purposes' might be arguable, since just about every drive is a test of whatever I just finished tweeking. I'll still be using regular old plates for a couple years, and even when they hit 30.

I looked into this also and it would have resulted in substantial savings on my insurance rates (less than 10% of my current premium!) however using the car to drive to work would be against the conditions. Sucks, cause I only drive 7.2 km roundtrip for work! But, those are the breaks.

^Not sure if they have this in CANADA.............

placd1 11-18-13 11:29 AM

Yes, Collectors plates are available in Canada. That was the first thing ICBC offered me when I went to take out my insurance policy after buying the car and they realized the age :)

martinhickey 11-28-13 11:22 PM

What about in Oregon?

hornbm 12-01-13 12:55 PM

I thought the age requirement was 25 years? I know after 25 years you definitely don't have to do smog testing anymore, but I thought both of these things happened at the same time? Haven't honestly checked in a while.

Either way the next 10 years is going to be an interesting time for modded rotaries. Seeing as the new rx-7 (thanks new mazda ceo!)isn't happening I'll be adding some older cars to the stable.

RCW 46.18.220: Collector vehicle license plates.

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.37.390 "This subsection (3) does not apply to vehicles twenty-five or more years old" Best part of that RCW!

HMMM, according to the following Oregon DMV website, there aren't any collector plates available.

Only 'Antique'; "a vehicle must have been manufactured in 1956 or earlier to qualify for this license plate. Vehicles must be maintained as a collector's item. Plate Fees: $12 (one plate issued).
Available For: Passenger Vehicles, Motor Homes, Buses, Mopeds, Motorcycles, Trucks, Travel Trailers, Campers, Special Use Trailers, Heavy Trailers and Light Trailers."

You mean I don't have to get rid of the dump tube on the waste gate to register my FC here? Score. I know it doesn't have to do an emissions test, but I thought an open exhaust was illegal. The gate is on a 15 lbs spring; so it is easy to keep the noise sane for street driving.

EDIT: I read that link more carefully. Sections 1-2 still apply to all vehicles. Section 1 requires I get a new downpipe made that routes the waste gate back in. It is nice to see aftermarket exhaust is legal though.
(1) Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.
