I second the insurance companies' right to bump rates for no reason... Illustration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtEp5yc-g3A

I got a call from my Insurence Agent of American Family today saying that I need to find a new car or find another Insurence company because they won't Insure a Sports car.
Take his advice- find another company. There are so many to choose from it really pays to shop. Find a local "independent agent" cause he will have access to many companies. Also check the State Farm/Farmers/AllState/etc folks. If you have copies of your current coverage & VINs, you can just hand those over- then they don't have to ask a bunch of questions and it doesn't really take you that long to get lots of quotes. Insurance is based on such weird things these days (like credit and how far you got in school) that what works for one guy can be vastly different from another.
When my last FD got wrecked I have been dealing with the other drivers insurance, Farmers. To be blunt, I hate them with every ounce of my body. I hope I can take them for all theyre worth with my medical suit. I spent 2 months calling them every day and arguing the value of my car. Oh well...Just a heads up.
Honestly- every company sucks for somebody at some point. Especially when you are dealing with older cars that we have invested so much time and effort into. Reality is that even though a well-modified RX may be worth something to you and me, the general public doesn't care that much, so it gets reflected in the insurance payouts.
My FC is going to have a swapped out engine (TII). How will insurance cover that?
If you tell them, there is the possibility they will refuse coverage. If you don't tell them, you'll probably be okay until claim time. At which point they will inform you that the $5k you spent on the swap doesn't matter that much to them. You'd be lucky to get a few hundred dollars in consideration. Best thing to do is call your agent with 'hypothetical' questions. And make them give you real answers.
Any 2 door car is a sports car.
This is just a semantics issue. Just cause company A labels it and company B doesn't, doesn't mean it will necessarily affect the rate differently. It may, but that isn't a guarantee. Your insurance rate has far more to do with other factors (credit score, prior coverage amount, home ownership, driving history, etc) than with the vehicle.
had anyone here ever gotten lower rates for back seats in a FC?
Seems pretty unlikely. Rating 'symbols' are vased on VINs. I just looked at a couple of companies and they have no differentiation for back seats or not.
