looking general advice and input on a situation I'm going through with this garage who serviced my vehicle. anyways, what would be your guess would happen if you did the following...

If you took a high mileage V6 engine (200,ooo miles) which did not leak puddles of oil everytime it was parked. And you drained the oil in it, changed the filter then refilled the oil past the recommendation range so that the dip stick would read 1-3 inches higher then what is defined in the "operating range" Then drove the vehicle, parked it over night and came out to puddles of oil under the chassis.

what would happen to the engine by over filling it ?

Pressure from the added oil volume, combined with the already high oil psi and the operating temp would most certainly blow out oil seals internally in the motor, right ? causing the engine to leak oil. am i crazy to think this?

we got our family ride oil changed. I checked the dip stick the day of this service and noticed the measurement was well out of the operating range (overfilled) and ever since that day the vehicle leaks puddles of oil from "everywhere in there" as the service writer put it.

so i am getting a 2nd shop to throw the vehicle up on the lift and we are going to check out the oil leaks and determine which ones are new and which have been there for years. assuming the shop doesn't try to hide this by wiping away the leaks

A couple of things, if the oil was superbly overfilled it is possible it could be leaking past the oil pan gasket. Might explain the puddles of oil.

In an extreme case over an oil overfill, the bottom of the connecting rod will hit the oil in the pan on the downward stroke causing some crazy vibration.

I put an extra quart of oil over the full mark in the ls1 before an event (if it needs it) and it has never complained. :icon_tup:

I would check to see if it's coming out of the bottom of the dip stick. Most dip sticks tubes have an O-ring on the bottom.

I wouldn't panic yet. Drain a quart or two out, check the dip stick to make sure its back in range. Then hose everything down with brake cleaner that stuff evaporates off but you can try and wipe the oil too. Then start it up take it for a 10 minute drive come back and see if there are any leaks. Trying to get anything out of that shop will probably be a waste of time. I think its probably OK, too much oil shouldnt really raise oil pressure, since the oil pump is always picking oil up, its just if the connecting rods and crank are hiting the oil it will aerate it really bad and can foam it up.
