whats the difference between the R26b from the 787 and a 26B used in mad Mike's RX7
 

I know the R26b was only used in specific cars like the 787 and the 26b on Mad mike's was build from scratch but I've also seen other RX7 with a 4 rotor 26b on the internet, I assume these have also been built from scratch but how are they different from the R26b. first thing I noticed was just the manifold and a few things here and there. and also is it fair to say the 26b on mad mike's is better, as it was also put together by the Mazda engineers.

Mad Mike is a RedBull driver from New Zealand that used to drift a 4 rotor FD. He runs a 4-rotor MX-5 now. He's also got a rotary powered stadium racing truck. The REPU B2000 he calls it. That guy's got some cool toys!

Mike's was custom made, the R26B was an engine made by Mazda to win LeMans. Only one Japanese car maker and the only car without pistons has ever won outright there. Mazda also used that engine in the IMSA RX792-P, which is a spaceframe FD that looks like a widebody FC.

That guy on the internet with the red drag car that screams like a Banshee built it himself.

From my trusty Street Rotary book, besides the variable intake runners mentioned above, the R26B also had 3 plugs per rotor, ceramic apex seals that slid on composite ceramic-metallic coated trochoid surfaces. Not sure what that last part is but sounds cool and I don't imagine Mad Mike's had that.

^ means the rotor housings had fancy ceramic coating.

I imagine pretty much every major part of the engine was bespoke.

Everything is different between the two engines down to the parts making up the short block.

The Mazda R26B used custom cast side housings, MFR rotor housings and custom cast rotors.

The Pulse Performance 4 rotor uses modified production side housings, rotor housings and rotors.

You can see the Mazda parts on facebook as the guy maintaining Mazda's car collection has put up some great videos and pictures recently of R26B engine disassembly and rebuild.

If they used the ceramic coatings on the Mazda R26B then the ceramakote and other ceramic process must be good. I had been looking into ceramic for a street motor build for better longevity from the ceramic? Does anyone know how well the ceramic sticks to the housings vs the factory chrome? My concern using ceramic, would be the coating flaking off like the factory chrome does over time. But since the chrome would have to be removed anyways, decent used housing with slight flaking should be able to be ground and ceramic coated, and be better than new? Interested in coating my rotors as well, as I have heard that it aids in cooling them.

Got my signals a little crossed in the middle of editing that last post of mine. The 792P is a full-on race car, not based on any street car. The IMSA RX-7 (RX-7 GTO) is the Mazda street-based car with the 4-rotor in it. Not the R26B though, this engine was called the 13J

Whatever that car is, I have never seen it lose a race at the Laguna Seca Historics. Seriously, it's won every race I've seen it in over the years, and it is always the loudest car on the track.
