20w-50 or 10w-40

It really depends on where you liver and what temp it is outside.

Mazda proposes to use mineral oil 5w-30 for rotary engines after 1998.Don't forget that 5w-30 is the oil that rx-8 use. However, your car is made in 1999 but the engine uses older technology. So if you got in mind that you live in a hot country you can use 15w-50 or 20w50.

yea i use this type of oil my dad happen to show me it's from lubrication engineers its designed for harley davidsons to keep them cooler since they don't use coolant it keep the engine up to 25 degrees cooler

So glancing through some of the other posts it looks like most people agree that synthetic oil is ok to use. The weight is just dependent on the climate of the area that you live in, just like when you use it with every other type of car.

So it looks like 20W50 is the type to use in most mild climates and is a good summer oil weight.

Whereas 5W30 is the type to use during cold times of the year up north.

I have another question all together. On average how much oil does everyone burn off, I.E. how often do you have to add a quart or so?

I change oil in my FD every 2-3k miles and never need to add oil.

Earlier RX-7s meter in the oil faster and might need a top off now and then.

i'm not sure right off hand how much it costs i can find out for you and the thing about synthetic oil is you shouldn't use it the engine is designed to burn a little bit of oil to keep the internal case lubricated and if you've seen any of the commercial how they cook syntheic in a frying pan it doesn't burn not like mineral oil

Frying pans and engine conditions are two very different things. Low-ash synthetics burn relatively well. Early synthetics were not as good at this, so any intelligent marketer will always try to compare their stuff with the oldest crappiest synthetic oil they can get their hands on.

In any case there is always a tradeoff - synthetics have much better viscosity index and wear characteristics, but mineral oils do tend to burn a little cleaner. In an FD, the oil change interval is short enough and fuel dilution is usually extreme enough to nullify any longevity advantage with synthetics.
