Transmission noise?
I have a 1988 convertible RX7 and it has a few problems. The one I'm mainly concerned with is a noise made in 3rd and 4th gear around 2k-3k rpms. The best way to explain it is that it sounds like a large turbo. Its a whirring sound, almost sounds like a large exhaust leak, but I know I don't have an exhaust leak becuase I was just under there and tightened everything up. I also have a lot of driveline shake, but I believe that to be motor mounts causing the movement. I'm more concerned about the trans sound. I guess it could also be compared to like a wirewheel on metal. it only happens in 3rd and 4th, and if i let off and get back on the throttle it skips a bit
like chhh-chh-chh-chhh-chhhhhhhhhhhhh (Haha I know, sorry only way I could think of explaining it) I'm assuming this is some sort of bearing noise, but what puzzles me is it skips like that when I have driveline movement, but it only happens in 3rd and 4th. I was thinking input shaft bearing or something along those lines, but wouldn't that be all gears? |

i suppose it could be a few things, but right now i'm thinking check the timing.
Sorry for not being more clear, but the engine runs great. The Whirry noise is what skips, not the engine running itself. I have no hesitation or anything from the performance of the car. I don't believe it to be a performance or timing issue. |
Do you hear any noise while idleing? If so, does the sound go away when you press the clutch? If so, its your throwout bearing.
Have you checked your fluid? Been changed recently? Trans fluid is a VERY neglected auto fluid |

Have you checked your fluid? Been changed recently? Trans fluid is a VERY neglected auto fluid thanks for the responses guys. I'll change out the fluid when I change the engine mounts and update afterwards. |
When you drain the fluid, look at it closely and see if you see metal shavings
