Temp control sensor
 

We are trying to install a new temp control sensor. I have the right sensor, I think. It is M12 1.5 The trouble is that the place it is supposed to go into is a little too large. There is no other place to put it. The opening is just below and to the right toward the driver side of a sensor with a black top. I have a ‘94 base coupe. The sensor will plug into the green connection in the picture. Have I got the wrong sensor even tho every one I find online seems to indicate that I have the right one? Anybody go through this?

Which one are you talking about? Water or air ?

Anyway, if you are replacing it by a new one, it should fit perfectly, unless you've bought the wrong sensor.

It sure seems to be the right sensor M12 1.5, according to what I find online. It goes just next to the black capped fan control, you can’t see the opening in the picture. It will plug into the green connector you see in the picture. If I have the wrong sensor please let me know the right one. This one is too small. My husband has been doing the work on my car but he is sure we are trying to screw it into the right place. There isn’t any other place to put it. We are quite frustrated. Thanks.

If the threads are too small for the threaded hole, then it's the wrong sensor. What happened to the sensor that got removed? Still have it?

We lost the original, it apparently dropped out. The problem is all the info I find online calls for an M12 1.5. This is too small. I wondered if anyone else had this problem or if they have a different size which they used.

Instead of trying to find a sensor by its thread size, why not just find it by proper sensor? I dont have a 3rd gen but when I need a sensor I type in "1985 xxx temp sensor" and see what Atkins, MazdaTrix or Mazda has. I can find just about any sensor new like that, and your FD has so much better parts availability than my car.

A quick search on MazdaTrix found several air temp, coolant temp and fuel temp sensors for your car. Not sure which you're looking for since I have a different generation RX7, but somebody familiar with FD's should be along soon to help you out.

Where did you get the sensor you're trying to install, and how did you choose it? Its clearly the wrong part if it doesnt fit.

This is where the green and black connections go. I think you bought another "Coolant Temp Sensor", when what you actually needed was a "Water Thermoswitch". The green plug is supposed to connect to the temp sensor you already have installed (with black plug on it). The black plug goes to the thermoswitch you need.

Well, you were right. We were getting confused because the temp sensor in the car was black, not green. We finally took a closer look and realized the problem. We unscrewed the black sensor and put in the new green one and it was a perfect fit. Just like in the picture you posted. Maybe this car will get put back together yet. Thanks for your help.
