hi does anyone know if a manual tranny from a 91 rx7 non- turbo will fit on a 20b cosmo????

RotaryRocket88 04-02-11 06:32 PM

I believe it would bolt up just fine, but it's a poor transmission choice for a powerful engine. Check out the 20B section for ideas on what transmissions are typically used. I think they're usually TII or aftermarket.

rx7g11 04-02-11 07:25 PM

wheres a good place to look up info on that??

Yup...most definitely can be done, but that n/a tranny isn't going to last you very long, as they were only made to handle the 200hp range, better off using a t2 tranny, just a suggestion ...good luck!!!

rx7g11 04-06-11 07:26 PM

tyvm so a t2 tranny from a 91 turbo would be just fine???

BomberMan 04-06-11 08:28 PM

It will work better than an NA tranny. It's hard to say since it would all depend on what sort of torque you would want to put through it. I have a friend who goes through a transmission every year. Much of the reason for that comes from 25+ psi of boost.

canonize-ryda 04-06-11 08:28 PM

would be perfectly fine :)

canonize-ryda 04-07-11 08:41 AM

i heard there some fab work invovled and getting everything to fit is a bitch. ive neevr done or read about it but thats what i hear. i thought a 20b for 3500 would be sick as fuck but then u have to get it in...

The simple answer is "everything".

Yes, custom mounts are required.

As well as a standalone EMS to run the thing. Then exhaust, intercooler related, fuel lines, ignition, BIG radiator, clutch, rear end, modify the front stabilizer bar, water neck or hood needs to be modified for clearance, and probably some stuff I am forgetting.

If you are a fabricator, you could probably get it in and running for under $7K if you can build and are a smart shopper. If not, then you're looking at $15K minimum for a shop to install it.

rx7g11 04-07-11 10:26 PM

whats EMS???

canonize-ryda 04-07-11 10:34 PM

engine managment system

cab91089 04-07-11 11:05 PM

The 20b swap is a very hard swap to do because it is not an Rx-7 engine. It is from the Cosmo and came with automatic transmissions if I am correct. It would be much easier to install a 13b Turbo2 engine from your series which is series 5. Or you could put a 13b RE or 13b REW engine in from a 3rd gen FD Rx-7 but once you get into that engine swap you are getting back into cutom fabrication. There are engine mounts you can buy for an FD engine but it still requires a decent amount of work and money. Easiest thing to do would be to do the Turbo2 swap unless you are wealthy.

well its a project car im working on and from what iv been reading the 20b has the most power of them, getting the work done isnt a problem since i have my own shop its just the knowledge of if its possible to do it, an dif the frame has to be cut in order to fit

cab91089 04-08-11 04:36 PM

That sounds like an awesome project, good luck with it

You have your own shop and you are asking what an EMS is?! Just a little bit of research in the 20B subforum would have provided all the info given in this thread and much more.

Do you even need a 20B? How much power are you going for? 400HP is no problem for a 13B. 500HP isn't really a huge deal. A stock port 20B with a GT42 (standard setup) is a 600HP combination when not really pushed.

Have you driven a street car weighing 2700 LBs and having 400, 500 or 600HP?

rx7g11 04-09-11 08:39 PM

yea i asked, i didnt knw it by abriviation, didnt mean to offend u, but i want a 20b because it has more potential for more power, like u just mentioned, obviously im trying to make a fast car , and yes i have driven cars faster, cobra, z28 383 sttroker, corvette......i knw cars im just new to rx7s and just got one 2 months ago so im trying to learn more....

Aaron Cake 04-10-11 10:27 AM

There's no offense, I was just quite surprised that someone didn't know such a common abbreviation and it made me wonder if I was wasting my time with all the explanations. :) I really can't say if a Z28 with a 383 stroker, or a Cobra (Mustang? Shelby?) is faster, but a Corvette (any unmodified Corvette) is not faster than a 500HP 2nd gen RX-7. With traction, a 400HP 2nd gen is a low 11 second car. A 500HP 2nd gen is a 10 second car if it hooks up.

Honestly I'd suggest starting with an inexpensive 13B and build that first. Much of what you use will transfer to the 20B anyway (EMS if chosen correctly, intercooler, rest of the exhaust, clutch, etc. etc.) if you want to upgrade in the future.

rx7g11 04-11-11 11:33 PM

ok well iv been researching alot and yea it makes sense what your saying, so a 13b cosmo twin turbo engine, how much power capable are they?? becasue i have a place selling me one??

RotaryRocket88 04-11-11 11:52 PM

Just about any engine is capable of whatever you want if you stick a large enough turbo on it. I would suggest browsing the 2nd gen FAQ for engine swap info, the 20b section and searching through threads related to 13b-re (cosmo engines) and 13b-rew (3rd gen) engines.

You need to decide how much power you want to make, how broad you want the torque curve, what your budget is, how difficult swapping to a specific engine would be. Depending on your intentions, it may be easiest to just use a 2nd gen 13b.

cab91089 04-15-11 12:43 PM

I thought the Cosmos used the 20b not a 13b?

Brodie121 04-15-11 01:33 PM

They had 13b-re's and 20b's

cab91089 04-16-11 08:53 PM

Oh alright
