Steering colmn play. Steering box tight

Hey guys

to;dr
Steering has 3-4 inches of play. But steering box and wheels are tight and accurate. After sliding around a little the steering got loose suddenly.

I have an fb, and like every other fb the steering has a lot of play in it. About 3 inches of free movement. I know this is very common with the old manual rx7 boxes. But to me it seems like the steering box is actually pretty tight and the wheels themselves aren't drifting or have any play in them. The steering column can however be moved even when the car locks the shaft after pulling the keys out of the ignition (not all the way 360. just 3-4 inches) Maybe this is the same on everyone else's? When cranking the wheel to the left or right when keys out of ign I can feel and hear a kind of click, like a part that should keep the wheel from turning is just going through a notch instead of getting stuck in it.

The wheel got loose suddenly. So this also leads me think the whole system didn't just go limp over time. Saturday and it was wet out. I look a left onto a bigger street. Gave it a little too much gas and the back end came out. I fish tailed for a bit and then got going straight. Seconds after my Hektik skidz I noticed the play.
