Start-up Issue

Hello Rx7club

I've recently came upon a problem with my FD after driving it one day. The problem would be that when I attempt to start the vehicle, it's idling really strange and there is a white smoke coming from what looks like the turbo flange. I'll try to get a video tomorrow to show what exactly I'm talking about.

MODS:

Streetported 13b
Front Mounted Intercooler
60mm trim 1.15 A/R Turbo (Don't know the specific brand)
NO Catalytic converter
HKS Hi-power exhaust - (120mm)
HKS Pulley Kit
Koyorad Radiator

Thanks for all the help!

First question based on that mods list: What EMS?

How would you describe a "strange" idle? Low and rough? High? Normal speed but misfiring?

Are you losing any coolant or experiencing any symptoms of overheating?

Does it take excessive cranking to get the car started?

How and when did this first occur?

FYI that signature is over 2MB in size. Please change it to something more reasonable.

I have an FC commander, the idle is low and rough! There are no signs of overheating and nothing is being lost.
I guess you could consider it excessive cranking.
I don't get what you mean by how, I just attempted to start my car whilst in the parking lot of a grocery store and it wouldn't crank so I had my friend come
with jumper cables to see if it was the battery not having enough power and although that was part of the reason, I don't believe that it would cause all these problems.
It occurred about a week to two weeks ago.

if the battery was "a part of the problem", then replace it (or get it properly charged). it could easily cause a rough idle. if it's a relatively new battery, then check your charging system.

also, check the properties of your signature photos before putting them up. it will keep post like this or PMs of this nature from happening. it will help you enjoy this board more. I will assume that since you changed it after Aaron mentioned the previous one, that you're not intentionally trying to be difficult.

I don't think a battery would cause idle problems because it was still having them while still hooked up to the other vehicle. It's been a year since I replaced the battery and this is the first time I've had problems with it.

Here's a video for better understanding.

okay, 1 year old battery. gotcha. won't hurt to have it checked for charge, but it should be alright.

was the car recently flooded? (it sounds it.)

what EMS and has it been fully tuned?

also, the smoke you mentioned is probably a busted gasket at the manifold. I think I heard a leak.

TheNoggin 06-04-13 03:12 PM

Yeah, I'll check!
I don't believe it was, I'm not sure!
Okay, noob question, what's EMS?
Thanks, I'll check it out!

generic term for a stand-alone. EMS = engine management system.

check your plugs.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll get on it when I get back home this Sunday! I'll also be able to tell you my EMS as well.

Based on that video, check compression. :(

nice info

Well guys I started her today and then just gave it a rev to about 7000 rpms and let it drop down and it idled fine! Then after that I just said why not and took it out for a spin around the block. It drove fine for the first minute and then when I was coming to a stop, I l pushed in the clutch and the car dropped to 0 rpms. When accelerating, the car would sputter until I was above 3000 Rpms.

Has the car been sitting for a long period of time?

It's been sitting a little over a month.

Experiencing same symptoms just today with stock 13-brew, have you figured out the problem by chance ?

Aaron Cake 07-21-13 10:03 AM

Can the PFC do datalogging? If so, you may want to take some datalogs of the problems and post them to the PFC subforum. Maybe somoene familiar with the ECU can help.

Sounds like it could be a crank trigger issue to me.
