smoke from exhaust
Hey guys,
i just bought a 1987 gtu. its got a straight pipe on it and it smokes alot, its white smoke and i know thats oil. it only smokes when the rpms were up high and then winds down. im not sure why that is, my first guess was just excess oil burning but i want another opinion. anything will help thanks. |
could be bad side seal
it could be seals i ve heard 7's burn oil so it could be that
could be excess gas burning too
dose it somke real bad when you 1st start it up.
Well, white smoke on a rotary is coolant seals which equals bad news.
Just remember this: Blue=Oil White=Coolant Black=Gas I'd check compression. |
Bad oil control rings = running at high rpms, then let off the gas, and you get a huge cloud of smoke out of the tail pipe. Sound about right?
Try replacing a quart of your oil with Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer. I got a couple more years of use out of my last motor using the stuff. It works great. |
hey thanx guys so how much would new oil control rings run me
To replace those control rings, you will need to rebuild the motor.
i got same thing is happing to me but it smokes a lot even when at low rpm's and i found oil out the tail pipe. the motor sat for two years maybe even more should i try some sea foam to clean the carbon out then put some Lucas oil in there?
would it be better to get a re built 13b a scrap the one i have now?
Depends, are you willing to rebuild the engine you have now?
get a v8
i can get you a nice v8 to set in there if your gonne spend the money...ya might as well do it once reliably
Screw that man, nothing unreliable about the rotary engine.
If it is oil that is causing the smoke, then try the Lucas (replace one quart of oil, but can go up to two quarts of the Lucas). This can get you many more miles out of the motor that you've got right now, giving you a year or two to line up a rebuild or replacement. |
my car smokes after boosting once in a while but went away by itself.
Rebuild it yourself tha way you know what have
the problem is i dont have time to re build it my self or do anything because im in the military and cant leave base during the week. im willing to rebuild the engine i have cuz it still runs strong and pulls hard. anyway how much more horse power would a street port give me after the rebuild?

If it's white smoke it's nothing to do with oil. White smoke is from coolant.
Like bungalobob said. Blue=Oil White=Coolant Black=Gas Compression test and a leakdown test. |
so what do you do bout coolant. why is it leaking and were from. because i have a shit load of white/greyish smoke coming from mine.
Check your coolant first if it's keeps getting low, there is your problem. Where it's going is a bit harder to find, the white smoke indicates it's going into the rotor housings. but if the car sat for two years you could have more than one problem.
If you are "burning" coolant (large clouds of white smoke from exhaust) then you can try this:

im having the same problem ....
im having the same issue pulled the plugs and they had some water on them soooo im going to pull the motor out over the weekend and start my build
I got the same issue when I start my car sometimes a huge cloud of white smoke pours out, but when I shut it off and turn it back on it's fine. Also when I first start me car and drive away Blue smoke pours outta my exhaust, but when it warms up it stops why is that?
The solutions have already been posted:
If burning oil, either replace the oil control rings or start running the Lucas in the oil. If burning coolant, try the Alumaseal as detailed in the link I posted above. Ten minutes of reading may save you the trouble of pulling and rebuilding the motor... |
I kinda have the same problem. I just noticed it today. Doesnt seem to happen, except on first start of the day. I was just thinking it could be water build up in the engine, exhaust, etc since it was raining the night before. The smoke goes away after warm up, and doesnt come back during drives. Do I have anything to worry about?
ps its decently thick white smoke. |

from the little bit of stuff i know about rotaries it sounds like you have bad seals which is allowing coolant to leak into the combustion chamber and then it burns out the exhaust as white smoke. i had a similiar problem with thick white smoke pouring out the exhaust along with the engine overheating which pretty much meant my seals were bad and i needed a rebuild. i tried the block sealant Kentetsu is talking about and the smoking/overheating problem stopped. this isn't the best thing to do because the sealant can start to clog up the radiator and other parts. its up to you if you want to try it, it worked for me but the best thing to do is get a rebuild or new engine.
