Smelling gas inside the car?

I've had an '85 GSL-SE for about 8 months now, drive it a couple times a week, and fill it up every couple weeks. Just recently I added about two ounces of premix (OMP intact), filled it up and topped it off. I don't usually top off, but I did this time. Ever since then, I've been smelling gas inside the car while driving. Especially after running up the RPM's or doing some cornering. I checked the gas cap -its on tight.
I have a couple other issues with the car: 1) It surges at constant speed- especially in 1st and 2nd gear. 2) It 'pops' when I let off the gas suddenly at mid to high RPM's. It's not a loud backfire, just popping. 3) The shift boot isn't attached to the underside of the console and I feel heat radiating up through there. I mention that because I'm wondering if that could be where the gas smell is coming from -that maybe there's a small exhaust leak and the car is running lean and the heat exchanger is not burning all the fuel? I need to get under there and check the exhaust system, but I wanted to see if any of you had any theories/ideas? Has anyone had this problem before?

Does anyone have any theories or ideas?

Sounds like you may have a leak on the top of the fuel tank, or maybe a bad line. I need to pull my tank to check the same type of issue.

I would stop driving the car until you get this fixed.

You could siphen some gas out of tank to a level you know it didnt have a problem at before, if it quits then keep the tank level low til you have time to drop the tank for repairs.Make shure you have no leaks in eng. compartment first!!

sounds like you have a break in your fuel line somewhere, check around your injectors also make sure they all have a good seal. in the mean time i wouldn't pick up the habbit of smoking and riding around in the car. good luck with finding the prob.

sounds like a leak in the top of the fuel tank or it could be because of the exhaust leak, i have a similar problem because of the leak in my exhaust.

also check around your fpr the rubber seal is known for cracking and breaking

Check your Pulsation Dampener. It's on the front of the lower fuel rail. Any and every time you smell gas while driving, you need to check this. FCs are notorious for this part going bad. search the 2nd Gen tech forum for "PD fire".

Same problem..

Im having the smae problem and mine turned out to be the first gasket between the exhaust manifold and pipe.. smell the worst at high rpms and started poping soon after the smell started its in pices now in my shop so get a small screw driver and poke at the first gasket to see if it is gone or has a hole or what ever... Just some ideas for you..

Thanks for all the ideas. The smell has gone now that the tank level has dropped. Now I have a coolant leak somewhere around where the oil cooler line goes into the back side of the engine. At first I thought it was the heater, cause it was the first time I've turned the heat dial to hot. Thanks again for all the replies.
