Skyline RX-7

So i was wondering if the R32 skyline RB20DET would phsycally fit in my 88 rx-7's engine bay, and if so, would else would be needed to switch my baby to a full blown skyline set up?

farberio 07-12-09 02:17 PM

Probably. I can't imagine it not.

And....if your asking............

It sounds like you may be wanting to let a shop handle this one.

i was definately planning on letting a shop handle the swap, as i don't have the tools anyways.

the fc has plenty more room than the fd...i have seen rb26 engines in fds so i dont find it surprising to fit in an fc.
why go for rb20 anyway? get the good stuff ...
...

cuz they're about a third the price
:dunno:

SmogSUX 07-12-09 05:39 PM

But they make a third the power...

Indian 07-12-09 05:59 PM

^^^ lol... so true

Unevolved 07-12-09 06:14 PM

Fast, cheap, reliable. Pick two.

Even more true if you're having a shop do it. Nothing at all wrong with that, don't let anyone look down on you for being a "checkbook mechanic." Those are the guys that keep the shops in business, and allow us DIY kinda people to thrive off of their support.

If you are going to do a rb20 why not do a sr20? better torque and it would have better weight dist... Though if you are going to put this kind of money into it (as in paying for all the work and fabrication to put a different motor in your car) (though i think someone might be making sr20 motor mounts for the fc?) the few extra bucks for the rb26det motor and trans would be worth it and might not be that significant for the power difference (after considering the cost you will already have from installing the other motor).

BS, cheap and reliable don't mix. At least not that often.

my 4000$ b18 turbo ek9.. it has 350whp w/out spray and 35mpg.. its reliable as fawk also.. ive been beating on it for over a year..

its cheap as dirt.. reliable as shit.. and fast as fawk.. all 3 is pretty rare though...

ugly is a different story lol

Unevolved 07-12-09 08:21 PM

Yeah, I've gotten into a discussion with some friends about that statement. Being of the gearhead-engineer crossbreed, we can do just about anything ourselves, which can lower the price pretty dramatically if you factor out labor.

It's still a good rule of thumb, though.

R-R-Rx7 07-12-09 08:38 PM

+1 on the sr20..if you gonna do all this work and spend a whole lot you have to at least put something good in (rb26dett)

KKMpunkrock2011 07-12-09 11:52 PM

rb25det, half the price, 3/4ths the power, rwd tranny, the rb26dett is only available with the awd tranny I think, not that it can't be done, it'll just be easier,
for example, a friend put a 1jz in his FC, with a th350 tranny, that's an old chevy tranny for you people that don't know, he did it, but it wasn't easy or cheap.

Te72Rob 07-13-09 02:17 AM

dont do it. ive seen an Sr20 swapped FC and it handled like the ass end of a dog on freshly waxed hardwood floors. poorly. i cant see a 6cyl making it better

SpideyFan6010 07-13-09 03:52 AM

If you have the cash....

why not just upgrade to a 20B :)

87TIIFC 07-13-09 05:26 AM

^^^ +1 rotary all the way! btw howd u make ur sig, i like it.

mazdadude7 07-13-09 08:41 AM

im sure a 240 would rather have the motor....

j_corso 07-14-09 07:28 PM

ass-end of a dog? hardwood-that's great, I think i'll use that one!

diablo_rx7 07-14-09 07:46 PM

i did a vett motor swap on my last rx7 it handled ok gas sucked but the power was nice lol. but i am also looking to do a motor swapp on my 88 gxl any good motor sugestions wnting to upgrade it to a 20b.
