Serial Numbers

New guy question:

In the FAQ sticky on the 2nd Generation RX-7 is a post entitled: "What does the VIN number mean/break down??" It says for 1988 models built from July 1987 through Dec. 1988 the serial numbers at the end of the VIN are 600001-700000. 1986 models are supposed to end in numbers 100000 to 200000.

I have three 1988 Rx7 convertibles. The build months and last part of the VINs for these vehicles are:
December, 1987 / J0102235
June, 1988 / J0106342
November, 1988 / J0108974

All the other letters and numbers seem to match. Am I missing something?

I am wondering if you are taking it into account that your car is a VERT and not a Coupe.
I'd be under the assumption that Coupe VINS and Vert VINS are different so they'd have different production number quotas.
Just a guess, but hey,..I've been wrong before!(frankly if the vin is on the car and on the ownership, after that.,I don't care.)

You're not wrong this time The model identification page of the parts fiche indicates VINs for the convertible trim level are FC351-100001. My verts are J0104390 and J0107034.

I wondered about the Vert/Coupe difference. I assumed the body style code (FC33 for coupes and FC35 for convertible) in the Vehicle Identification Section of the VIN would account for that distinction. But I do see in the '86-'88 parts catalog the VIN chassis # for the FC35s start with 100001. Thanks for pointing that out, Robby. I've read somewhere that the FC Vert was the only convertible built on a production line at that time. Seems logical that if convertibles had their own production line they therefore had their own production number.
