Salvage Title Problems

Hey everyone I just purchased a car from e-bay that had to be picked up in NY. It has a NJ Salvage Title. When I tried to get tags in Alabama I was told that I'd have to become a Dealer first. That has a great deal of expense to become a dealer/rebuilder just to get tags so that's out of the question. I was just wondering if any of you have any dealings with a salvage title before and how you may have resolved the problem?

Idea: go to a dealer and ask him to register the car for you..slip him a President or two.

I have never heard of that. I had a 1997 Honda Prelude that had a salvaged title and had no problem registering it in Alabama. The problem comes in when you have a certificate for a rebuilt title.

You have to have a rebuilder license in Alanbama to get a rebuilt title which is 10k dollars. If you have a friend lets say in Ohio you can have them take the car to get inspected to receive a rebuilt title and once that is done then you can get plates.

Wow, does anyone know if the same applies in Massachusetts? I could be purchasing a salvage vehicle in the near future from another state, with the intention of getting a rebuilt title after repairs.

I want to thank all of y'all for the responses, I can use all the help I can get. Does anyone have a dealer friend I could go too?

Hey do you have a dealer friend that I could go to?

This is what i do for a living. In ct the dmv does the inspection for you if you need the inspection done and they are telling u a dealer or repair shop can do it just bring the car to a shop if it can pass and have them register it. If it cant pass find a way to get a shop to sign off on it. Here we have to show the dmv inspectors the car. Your lucky you dont. Youll just have to do a little foot work but you dont need to become a dealer.

To rbermani. I believe in mass once the car has had repairs and has the rebuilt title you are good.

Hey, that sounds like it is easier there than here. Al. wants you to become a Dealer/Rebuilder before you can have it inspected. A citizen cannot rebuild or have inspected there own personal vehicle.
Do you have to be a resident of Ct to do this? and what does it cost there?

Here check this link

http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=804&q=244912

The fee in ct is $88 and I believe all you need to prove residence in ct is a piece of postmarked mail with a ct adress.

Vermont is the easiest state I know of to register vehicle. You dont even have to be a resident.
