S5 tII Keg questions
 

So, it is no secret I have been on here awhile and should know full and well about searching. I have done this and it all certainly appears for what I want, is going to be a rebuild.

But,. Never hurts to ask and gather thoughts as a collective unit. Plus at this time of night, most of us are drinking a few beers and have super powers. Cheers

Car: 1987 S4 FC Base base base model, N/A!!!!!!

So, I picked up a full S5 TII keg, tranny, diff, and axels at bargain prices.

The transmission, diff and axles are going to be installed very soon.( already know everything I need to for that, thx forum)

But the engine, which is literally a stripped down keg at this point I have some concerns.


Previous owner picked it off a car that was being sent to the scrap yard because that cars owner left it at a body shop and never paid for work. The keg was supposedly rebuilt and it sat on an engine stand ever there after till I bought it.

I Pulled the top 2 plugs from front and rear, poured some oil in, and turn it over by hand at least once a week. However, it seems the front housing is missing a "puff" of air on one of the faces, maybe two, but seems more like one. the rear puffs away 3 solid times, the front is hit or miss at 2 solid puffs or 1 1 1/2 Puffs.


The engine has sat, alot. If it was indeed rebuilt would it be something "rather simple" ( I am aware I need to take this girl apart), or should I just go in and rebuild the whole damn thing again?

apologies, I figured it was going to be a rebuild. .... and another 1k poof gone on this car haha

this is the only statement that leads me to think maybe you should pull it back apart. the "if"-part, the uncertainty that it was indeed rebuilt. you can look in through the exhaust ports and see what information you can gather, but ultimately there will be nothing conclusive besides seeing it in person.

just so i'm clear, we are talking about an engine that was built and never started, right?

well what one person says when selling something is, and actually is has yet to be seen.

But it was stated it came from a running car, then was stripped down to the keg, and sat on a stand for awhile. The previous owner never turned it over by hand every so often either.

okay, so it was a running engine after being rebuilt. honestly, it can go either way. the sounds that the engine makes when you turn it by hand are a general comfort, but not much else. I've had engines that "sounded weak", but ran perfectly (started quickly, great power, no smoke, etc.) . it might be worth your while to get an actual compression test done before pulling it apart since that's a bit more quantitative. your advantage right now is the fact that it is not already bolted to your car so if it does end up being bad, it's already out of the car - no back and forth.

Right on, well I have the tranny and starter for it, I suppose it I could do a poor mans check.

I just hate to hear about "I thought it was good" and it gets installed..
you hear some Really GOOD curse words get created that way!

If I didn't see it running, drive it, or get it back from a shop freshly rebuilt, I NEVER "think its good" and "assume the worst". It only amplifies the concern when you buy engines from 20-28 year olds that have a knowledge base that's questionable at best
