S5 AFM on S4 Car/Wiring

Basically, is it possible to put the S5 sliding cone AFM in place of the flapper door style S4 AFM?

I was looking around at a friends S5 turbo and the sliding cone AFM *looks* like it's a better design. Certainly at the very least the lower airbox is a lot better designed in comparison to the S4 part with the square inlet.

Can the S5 AFM be wired to work with the stock S4 wiring and system? Or are they too completely different from one another?

You're talking about TIIs, yes?

Yes, but it's not worth the effort or hacking up the wiring harness. Neither AFM really becomes a restriction until around the mid-300 whp range, where they will reach their maximum opening point. For most people, once you're making that kind of power, you probably are using a standalone, which will eliminate the AFM.

More importantly, gains can be had from swapping out the TID for something with a much less restricted path. A simple 3" pipe w/ an adapter on the end can be used with a cone filter to make a direct path into the turbo. The catch is that an air box of some sort should be made to keep the intake from sucking in hot air. The stock system pulls air from the bumper area, but it has a bunch of 90* angles that hurt flow. You can search my name for a thread on the airbox and TID I built for my car.

Also note that opening up the intake and exhaust paths can lead to boost creep with a stock wastegate. Porting is necessary to prevent boost spikes that can blow the engine.

Yes, the turbo Models.

Reading the other thread I'm seeing that the S5 AFM is actually a little worse, I suppose it just looked better from the outside haha. Though swapping the lower part of the airbox seems like it might be a worthwhile thing if there were a way to get it to work properly.

I'm not quite sure how to find a thread like that, I remember searching but it wouldn't let me search for terms under three letters, which s4 and s5 are, of course.

I just searched thread titles for "afm swap".
