Rx7 running issues after sump re-seal
 
Hi, I removed and reseated the sump on my rx7 fd twin turbo. It all went to plan no issues, re-set suspension, re-filled oil etc....when I restarted the car it was kicking loads of smoke out the exhaust and idling really rough! Could I have done anything ? Only plug I disconnected was turbo actuator which I checked and is plugged back in. The spark plugs look very dirty could be complete coincidence they chose this time to start causing misfiring, rough idle and smoking issues? Other thing I noticed is the brake servo hose with the one way valve built in the pushes into the manifold was disconnected! Seems to create excess pressure and keep popping off. When it is disconnected the car idles smoother but produces loads of smoke form exhaust, as soon as I re connect it the car idles really tough sounds like it surges and cuts out. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking spark plugs and new hose (2 random, unrelated faults at once?

We need to know more about the process you used to reseal your sump. Im guessing youre referring to the oil pan. Depending on how you went about doing it then we could be looking at an oil starvation issue.

Hi,
Drained the oil, removed the pan (after dropping suspension etc)
Re-sealed and re fitted suspension. After approx 4 hours I started the car and revs were fluctuating between 600 and 700. What should happen is it revs at 2000 rpm until water temp reaches 75degrees at which point revs drop to normal (900) the engine was shaky, lots of smoke from exhaust and bad petrol smell. I rechecked what I had moved etc to do job and all was ok. That's when I noticed the bake servo hose was off, when I connect it to manifold the engine idles rough and misfires also cuts out when driving. When is disconnect runs better and idles at normal revs but loads of smoke from
Exhaust. It has a one way valve built in that could be faulty? I checked the spark plugs which were really dirty and black. cleaned them up well but made no difference to running. I'm thinking it could be a complete fluke and totally unrelated to sump re-seal that car chose that moment to play up? Oil starvation sounds possible, when I've changed oil in past once I re-fill I just start car and once reaches running temperature There has been no

what did you use to reseal the pan? what was the actual product? theres a possibility that with such a short cure time, the sealant may have broken off and got into your oil pick up causing an oil starvation issue. how well did you prep the surfaces before re installation? there is a possibility this is not the case and something wonky could have happened but whats it worth to you to verify that something didnt get sucked up into your oil pick up?

dropping the front subframe isnt exactly a quick job but i would rather do that then pay for a new motor. if you havent got it figured out by now, i would suggest dropping the pan again and checking your oil pick up

The prep and cleaning if the area were very high standard, is there any way to tell or test if there is oil starvation issues? It does feel and sound more like misfiring or only one rotary working .

You would just need to see what your oil pressure is. If it was running fine before you did the pan and all you did was the pan then there is chance something decided to act up because race car. Im just throwing out possibilities. Try deflooding it and cleaning the plugs just to see what happens. It may clear your problem up. As far as checking oil pressure, without an aftermarket gauge, I dont know how to do it. I wouldn't rely to heavily on the stock one.

What did you use to reseal the pan

Do you have the stock ECU? If so, is it throwing any codes?

You may have inadvertently broken something. If the vacuum lines are original, they get brittle and break easy. You might also look at your o2 sensor.

Thanks, it's an apexi ecu I will have to check for codes. I'll get a smoke test done to see if there's an air leak.
