Running Issue

Hey guys. I'm new to the rotary world. So I bought my first Rx7 about a year ago. It's a 1990, A/T convertible. It has the 13b in it and a custom exhaust. When I got the car, i drove it a little bit but i knew walking into it, it wouldn't be road worthy until some work was done. But I feel I bit off more than I can chew with this one. Here's the issue. The car is a little rough to start. When it starts it idles high for a little bit (which I heard is normal) as soon as the car is warmed up, the idle drops to normal. When I step on the gas, in park or neutral, I can rev the car like it just came off the show room floor. But as soon as I get it in gear it's like it wants to fall on it's face. It won't rev above 3500. I need help trying to get this problem pin pointed. I've thought about replacing the computer, seeing as I have a spare, but I just don't know where to start with this. Thanks for looking guys.
Sean

It almost sounds like the idle needs to be adjusted, or the trans is in OD

Does it do the same thing if you put it in 1st?

Can you slowly bring the idle above 3500 rpm when driving. If you can but it feels like the car is falling on its face when you try to shoot the rpm through this level then your issue is likely related to the secondary injectors as they are activated @3800 rpm. The issue more specifically is either clogged secondary injectors or more likely an engine/ECU/Sensor grounding problem which is quite usual w/these cars.

Iduley, it only dies out when it's got a load. If I put it in gear it will get up to about 10 mph and about 3500 rpm. I might have to put a charger on the battery and take a picture of all the lights that light up. It does have a check engine light sometimes. I've cleared out the gas tank thinking that it was the old gas, and put in new gas, but it still has the issue. I've heard that it could be injectors, but I'm unsure how to test. Can anyone give me some info on testing/checking both primary and secondary injectors.
Satch, it doesn't want to get over 3500 rpm. How do I check the engine/ecu/sensor grounds?

Auto trans?..Have you checked the Tranny fluid level?..

reds90rx7 03-24-15 08:18 AM

yes auto trans. and yes i have. should probably do a filter and fluid. I'm not sure how old it is or if it's even ever been done

Ok, i was under the understanding that it was dieing in gear at a stop.

The ground that gives issues for the secondary injectors is under the upeer intake manifold, while your at it, you may as well clean the other grounds for the car also. Google Aaroncake and look at his website, theres alot of info there that will be beneficial to you, including ground locations

You can check for error codes. You can manually force the error codes to be displayed by grounding an Orange wire in a Green Check connector near the battery. The wire is the only wire found in this particular connector. After being grounded the key is placed to on and any error codes will be displayed.

iduley, thanks for that website. I'm looking over it all right now. I may have found a solution.

Did you find your fix? I don't have an automatic but am having the same issue more or less.

I am also having a very similar issue. I have a M/t though. How hard is it to get to the ground under the intake? I should really consider giving this a try. Please let me know if you got this fixed and which steps you took doing so. Thank you!
