Renting tools vs buying
 

I'm at a point in my build where I need to source a valve spring compressor. I've watched my dad use the old fashion C clamp style back when he owned the service station in the 70's, but this head off a BP DOHC is different. The HLA's recess into the head so that the valve keepers are about an inch bellow the structural part of the head.

The dilemma is, the tool for this particular head is specialized and expensive. I usually buy tools as I go along so as to add to my collection, but to spend $60 and up for a tool I'll probably only use once doesn't really make sense.

I suppose I should disclose that I haven't tried looking for a rental yet. I'm going to take some pics with the Galaxy tab so that I can represent my issue well during the renting process. I really hope they have what I need, but even so, where should a person draw the line?

If I buy this tool, will I be doing more head work? Possibly. Hrmm

if it costs $60, it might just be worth your time to eat the cost. for the record, you should try pricing the valve spring compressor for an Audi/VW .... :) anyway, see if you can find one to rent. at the end of the day, you're the only expert on the state of your finances.

try seeing if you can rent one. if that fails and you're not in a super rush to get it done, then try signing up on a Miata forum and see of one of those hardcore guys is local to you and has one that he's willing to lend/rent to you.

I decided to go ahead and buy the tool. I found it for a good price on line but am not able to use my Visa atm which means I have to wait.

Buy tools... there's been more than once where they come in handy. That tool I thought I'd use once save my ass a few more times.
