Removing A/C in 86 GXL ...

Can someone tell me the link to the thread where it explains how to remove your A/C? Or can someone tell me exactly what I need to remove and do? Thanks.
I'm doing some minor weight reduction and I cant find the thread anywhere but I know it's on here somewhere.

just stay away from yoohoo belts...

farberio 04-30-09 11:28 PM

yoohoo belts have nothing to do with A/C removal.

Youhoo belts are one solution to water pump belt slippage when you remove the air pump.

do you have horribly hot summers? pretty much imo if it works leave it on! but if you want to take it off shouldnt be more that just removing the pump and everything it hooks to. just watch out for that freon. it'll get you high

fcs3l0ve 05-01-09 02:29 PM

The summers here aren't too bad and my a/c doesn't work anyway. Do I have to take the power steering pump out too?

farberio 05-01-09 04:49 PM

No you don't.

thejallenator 05-01-09 05:21 PM

power steering is for girls! lol not kinda wish mine had it. i have a p/s question since it was mentioned. would i be able to add p/s without changing over the steering rack? i know that on like older toyota pickups you can jsut pull a plug on the rack and run the p/s lines and bam you have the power steering. wondering if its the same here?

farberio 05-01-09 07:41 PM

It depends, if your rack is a true manual rack then no.

If you have a depowered power steering then you might be able to depending on how it was pepowered.

thejallenator 05-01-09 10:20 PM

so since mine didnt come with p/s i prolly cant convert it?

farberio 05-01-09 10:23 PM

You can but you have to install a power steering rack, lines, pump, and computer. Should be easy to find on the for sale section.

I detested the 7 Power Steering and removed it.

I started taking the A/C out. So far I got the drier/receiver out and the refrigerant lines. Later on today I'm going to take the compressor out. Thanks for the help.

thejallenator 05-02-09 12:34 AM

eh seems like too much to make it have p/s not even worth it. ill jsut deal with it.

nice take some pictures of the removal process if possible. would be nice to have a decent write up made for removin the ac

Okay so my power steering pump is above the air conditioning condenser. If I take the condenser out, will the power steering pump still bolt in or is it being supported by the condenser? If it is being supported by the condenser then I guess I should just leave it in. Someone let me know please. Thanks.

It's fine there. They're on separate brackets. It is possible to remove the A/C without getting the P/S out of the way first though it is a huge PITA.

fcs3l0ve 05-04-09 02:33 PM

Alright I was just wondering because I couldn't really tell from just looking. It seems like it really would be a pain in the ass to get out the condenser without taking the power steering pump out first. So I'm just going to take the pump out first to get to the condenser. It shouldn't be too bad. Thanks for the help.

The power steering and a/c are mounted on the same bracket, but both units mount to that bracket. Meaning you can remove one without the other. It does look kinda stupid though, if it bugs you as much as it bugged me you can find a bracket that is for a/c only. You will know what I mean when you remove the P/S.

The power steering pump is too much of a pain in the ass to remove right now. I'm going to wait another week or two until I install the new engine and just take the a/c condenser out then.
