Removing the air pump belt? fb GSL SE
So my alternator belt snapped and I had to replace it. Instead of going through the pain of putting the air pump belt back on can I just leave it alone? I know the air pump is not needed to run the car and I live in SC so there aren't any emissions testing. Is there any problem with just leaving the air pump sitting there doing nothing? Thanks need an answer quickly, need to go drive soon.

no problem not running the air pump. the alternator and water pump are all that are REALLY needed. however, if you're going to be in there fiddling with taking the air pump belt off, then why not just replace it since it doesn't sound like you plan to delete it altogether?

Won't just removing the air pump belt cause the alt/fan belt to slip under high RPM's? i've read that you can get a duel pulley to counter-act this.

You are correct, usually slipping even under normal driving. Your options at that point are the yoohoo belt (single, short/tight belt) or a dual sheave pulley with dual belts. I've ran both, I prefer the dual pulley by far.

If you think putting on another belt is hard then you may want to rethink this car...lol!
It will suck the time out of you. Options: 1: put belt on. 2: leave belt off,run one belt to the water pump,engine overheats and blows engine,replace engine. 3: Take PUMP off because you don't want to put belt on..double the work..BUT you need a double alt pulley so you can drive the waterpump with 2 belts. |

Before you pony up for a dual sheave alternator pulley kit from Banzai Racing, I'd suggest taking a good, solid look at your electrical system. If it's anything like the S4, your alternator is probably overworked and you'll probably want to upgrade to a FD Alternator very soon. I would hate for you to order the pulley and belt set from Banzai Racing, then have to buy another $50 pulley from Mazdatrix as a result of a dying stock alternator due to the difference in their shaft diameters (FD is 17mm, FB/FC is 15mm).
