removal of my apexi safc?

I just got a 88 TII and it has a safc1 in it. Dude claimed it needed a pro tune to run 100%. I'm saving for a new haltech ecu and harness since I hate this safc and it makes no since to me. It didn't wanna idle or run great at all and I can't figure this safc out. My question is if I just reset the safc would it be the same as me taking the safc out and rewiring the ecu back to stock or no? Any input would be great on this headache. I've resetted it and it still seems to not have good throttle response out idle til I mess with it. So would I just waste my time removing it all together? Thanks

Without actually taking the thing out you can't have a definite answer.
Who knows if it is wired up correctly or tuned right to begin with.

I see a LOT of threads posted about the SAFC and they ALL have "why can't my car do this",sort of thing, which leads me to believe that the damn thing just doesn't like to co-operate with the car!

You are at the point where you want to switch the unit out for a Haltech for which you will need to have knowledge of tuning.
If the SAFC is hard to get a grasp of(I personally despise them) I would just yank the SOB out and run stock, enjoy the stock set up and then eventually toss the Haltech in once you can either get some Tuning knowledge or have a tuner available to help you.

Does the car have stock injectors?

It's been a while since I've messed with an S-AFC but memory says that it is spliced into the power, TPS, ground and RPM signals via tapping into the ECU harness. Then it is connected in series with the AFM signal. So removing it should be as simple as disconnecting those wires and then reconnecting the AFM wire back to itself. If it was installed per instructions then the AFM wire would have a barrel connector on it so you can just connect to those two together to bypass the S-AFC.

550 primary 1000 secondary. It is hard to start sometimes and has god awful throttle response on lower rpms. Compression is good tho. Also I have to add alot of fuel with the safc to get it to even idle, I'm starting to believe maybe one of the primary injectors isn't firing correctly. Does this sound like it could be a good place to start looking? If so how do I go about it. Also Dude I got it from claimed it was half bridge port but it doesn't sound it

And the way he has the safc wired in here is a complete mess, its a awful hack job

Well, theres your problemo.

You're not going to be very successful running that with a stock ECU.

I'm lost to where my problem is? Primary injectors?

7dust 12-14-14 02:46 PM

If its a half bridgeport, not going to run well on stock ECU. Probably can't idle without adding fuel as you have discovered.

Also, you are going to have issues with the 1000cc secondaries on the stock ECU.

An SAFC might get it to run but its going to run like complete ass best case. Worst case you will blow the engine.

SAFC is ok for mostly stock engine setups and minor tweaking / slightly larger injector changes.

Dude claimed it was half bridge port but I have no clue. My friend who knows alot about 7s said it doesn't sound ported at all. Why would you have to add fuel to get it to idle with a half bridge. Thanks for all the input btw. It had a tune on the safc that the guy before me did and it ran okay after boost but no so great before boost. I accidently deleted the tune so now I'm stuck

I unhooked the safc and its still doing the something, no idle. Only way to idle is to hook up the safc and add fuel, i was thinking the primary injectors may be clogged cuz it has bad bad throttle response and I have to add the fuel. And its hard to start. Fuel pump wired to a switch
