Rebuilding a currently running 12a

Hello all, I'm currently looking at purchasing a 1984 Rx7 gsl with the 12a. The car runs and drives perfect, starts up great and even starts well hot. But the car has 91k miles and hasn't ever been rebuilt. I'm worried that after I start driving it, the motor will let go seeing as their life is only ~80k. I'd like to know what parts should be replaced to make sure I have a solid daily driver. I'm on a sorta tight budget so I would like to not have to replace more than I have to. I'm planning on getting the Atkins DVD and some form of kit but not sure which I need. What parts wear the most or cause issues? What's the best way to go about this? Can anyone point me to a good kit to just handle the major components? Opinions on whats best to rebuild a car that already runs great? Thanks.

welcome to the forum. not sure why people think these engines don't last, i'm nearing 200k on my build i did back in 93. maybe i'm just lucky. there's an old thread here of a guy that had a gsl-se that had 300k on the clock.

Not sure where the engine life number of came from, but I would not rebuild the engine until conditions justify so. One of the issues with opening up a good running engine is that the parts may not be worthy of a rebuild. Things such as rotor housing chrome flaking is the biggest concern.

You can always buy a second engine and rebuild it so it is waiting in the wings when needed.

Drive and enjoy it.

Well I don’t want to end up destryoing the interals if i dont rebuild. But i do i have a spare 12a in my 79 i could rebuild in the meantime. If its good to go ill run it as is i suppose and just mix a little 2 stroke in there. Its going to be my daily so i dont want to have to rebuild just yet. Anything i should do to try and prolong the engine life?
