Rear Speaker problems (installing after-market)

I've tried using the search function and Google was no help at all.
I drive an 86 n/a and decided to toss the old crackling stereo today and replace it. I'm afraid I'm going to blow the stock speakers since they don't appear to be in to good of shape.

That being said, is there any way to mount the speakers above the rear struts? The stock speakers are glued to the original mount, and I can't find anyone selling a solution. I'm not the greatest at fabricating anything, so any links or helpful tips at separating the original speakers from the mount would be much appreciated.
