Purchasing Rx7 FD, NO PS/ABS ??
 

Hey guys,

Need some input here. I have been in the market for a FD for some time. I think I have finally found one, but the only thing that is steering me away is that it does not have PS or ABS. The car has a manual steering rack installed. I am not so worried about the PS but more of the ABS.

All of my other cars always had it. 240,RX7,EVO so I am not to sure how its going to feel. The car is out of state or I would go test it for my self. How much of a difference is the car with and without it. I have maybe locked up the brakes once or twice.

Any input from you experienced guys would be great.

From my experience a vehicle that had power steering that is no longer working is very difficult to steer, not fun to drive.

I don't mind not having my ABS or PS. In my opinion no PS is stiff to drive and makes you feel the road more which isn't a bad thing if your used to it, but I prefer to have it. No ABS isn't bad at all as all my street/track cars and track cars are deleted. Word of advice tho, if it doesn't have ABS, your insurance may not cover you if you were ever involved in an accident... Every insurance is different but something to look into.

Thanks for the input. The car does have a manual steering rack so I don't think it will be as bad as the PS pump going out but still harder.

The ABS is what kinda gets me worried but that is probably because I just over think everything Been reading a lot on ABS and every one has a mixed review on it. Some love it and some think your a complete idiot for taking it out.

That's a whole nother story if it is a factory non-power steering car, you should be okay it's not that difficult. when I bought my most recent FC one of my requirements was a non-power steering car it is a little bit more difficult sitting still but once you start moving it is perfectly fine. I prefer the non power steering.

No FD came without PS and I don’t think any FC did either.

OP...there are only two reasons for removing PS and/or ABS that I can think of...track use or the owner being lazy and cheap. Factor in that you haven’t personally see or driven the car and its not encouraging IMO. If you’re looking for something safe, streetable and reliable you should probably keep looking.

I wasn't sure about the FD I have never seen an FD without power steering but I am not a third gen guy and I do not know everything. I do know that you can get and FC without power steering from the factory I had a friend that had an 87 Turbo 2 with no power steering and my 87 base model came Factory without power steering.

If the chassis is solid it may not be an issue as these items can be added back on.

ABS pumps are not difficult to locate. Verify it still has the abs ECU in the rear trunk area. You may also need the hard lines in the engine bay and sensors on each hub. Most people only remove the engine bay items and leave the rest.

P/S will be a little more difficult because original powered racks do not come up for sale often.

Actually bought a car with NO power steering..It was an FC,
Currently got an FC that I "had to" put a manual rack in (got a 302 in it).
I MISS Power steering..It's bulky in town..(but then again it's really decent at highway speed).

OK, FC's could be had w/o PS, standing corrected. But it really makes no difference since we're talking FD. This car sounds like the proverbial horse that was run hard and put up wet.

Back to the beginning of this whole post I think he just needs to do what he is comfortable with, I almost bought an FD for $12,000 it needed some work and I decided by the time I put the work in that was needed I should just save my money and buy one that's already decent, that I ended up buying an FC (again) everytime I get rid of an F C I swear my next one will be in FD but it never seems to work that way.
