Problems I'm having.
 

So, about a week ago I purchased my first RX-7. It's an 85, love the car, but I keep having issues with the engine, I've replaced belts, spark plugs, and put a new starter into it since I purchased it a week ago, $400 I wasn't expecting to spend. But my current issue is, whenever the car is cold, or hasn't been run for a bit, I just wont start. It'll turn and turn and turn but never crank. I bought some starter fluid to try and help, i think that maybe its a fuel issue since I sprayed the starter fluid into the carburetor and it started just fine. So is it a carburetor issue or fuel issue? I'm stumped. Also, if anyone know what a little box under the dash with the part number FA5466931 or 061700-1160 12V is that'd be helpful too as I need a new one of those.

My '90 does the same thing. I know in other cars I've had if the fuel pressure regulator is bad or going bad, it will allow fuel to leave the lines and make its way back to the tank. So it could be that. What i've been doing is turning the ignition on, letting the fuel pump prime, then turning it off, doing that a few times, let it crank for about 5 seconds then flooring the gas pedal momentarily. Usually it takes off, if not I let it keep cranking and floor the pedal again after another few seconds. That's worked for me every time. Just be careful not to flood it or you'll be sitting there even longer. Let me know if this works for you!

His is carb'd, whole different world.

Are you sure the choke butterflys are closing completely? How does it run after it starts? Does it stay running on its own at all?

Another question, have you owned a carb'd vehicle before? If not, you know you have to push the pedal at least once on a cold start?

start with cleaning the carburetor and checking the compression.

since you bought the car a week ago, a full tuneup should be high on your to-do list. you may also want to confirm where the timing is.

i have no clue what that part number is. Google turned up nothing. can you post a photo?

i was actually going to ask this, too and inquire if he's using the choke, but i decided to give the benefit of the doubt on it, but it is a valid question. :)

I was going to do the same, but then remembered what age we're in and that almost everything has been fuel injected for almost 30+ years, some people picking these cars up aren't even 20, and don't know how to start a carb'd car

Yeah, once I get it cranked it runs like a champ, I and a friend of mine think its due for a carb cleaning, so we're taking the carb apart this weekend to fully clean it, I've done a full tune up on the car, replaced everything. Usually when I start it first in the mornings I run it with the choke for around 5 mins to get the engine warmed up as itll just die if I dont have the choke on. I'll post some pictures of the carb once its taken apart and the engine bay.

FA54-66-931 is the Power Antenna Relay, this specific relay is only found on 84-85. A little tidbit is that you can usually identify what the origin car is by the part number's prefix. For body-related items, FA0x is 84-85, FB0x is 86-88, FC0x is 89-92, FD0x is 93-95, etc.
